Also known as "The Buckhorn" or "Manny's Buckhorn Tavern". Right across the street from the Owl Bar, and I couldn't agree more Greg, much tastier than The Owl! Only $4.50 for a HUGE buckhorn burger too! We go a couple of times a month.

Sorry for allowing such an irrelevant issue to this thread get me riled up so much. I chalk it up to being an uber geek who is passionate about his home, career and regional history/prehistory in general.
Anyhoo, as far as my favorite restaurants in the Las Cruces area go, well...considering that I can get better food at home, it's a toughie. When I do eat out, I enjoy Andele's and Chope's (yeah, Chope's has become a bit cliche in the Cruces area these days). Way back when, I enjoyed Nellie's and the Spanish Kitchen, as well.
A word to the prospective tourist: if you want to experience Las Cruces from a local's perspective, La Posta and Garduno's aren't held in such high regard around here. There are a few hidden gems in town, and I encourage you to drive around and find those little "hole-in-the-wall" places most people wouldn't normally consider visiting. That includes driving around some of the older parts of town that aren't as tourist-friendly. Makes for a more authentic experience!

I was born and raised here in Gallup. I would recommend the "out-of-the-way" places to experience the best mexican food in town. There is Genaro's located on Hill and 6th Street, Jerry's Cafe on Coal Ave. between 4th & 5th Streets and of course, the El Sombrero, located on W. Hwy. 66 and Arnold; then Don Diego's Restaurant on Hwy. 66.

Hey, you HAVE to tell me where those little holes in the wall are.....I will be going to Las Cruces from time to time for Sam's Club and other shopping...I'll note Adele's and Chope's......but I don't have a lot of time to search out a lot of places, as I am not local to LC (Alamo)....I'm going to find Alamo's little holes in the wall when I get some more energy and am not so tired from the move!! LOL!!

I'm getting hungry reading these posts. I love New Mexican food. It's far different from any Tex-Mex I've had in Texas, or the bland food I've had in Mexico. In Albuquerque, Los Cuates is my favorite (Menaul between Wyoming and Eubank, or locations on Lomas, west of San Mateo). In Ruidoso, I love Lucy's Mexicali Restaurant.

In Deming, there are several good restaurants. The best one, by far, is Si Senor. One word says it all-YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMSSSS!!!!!

Asado by other names

Anyway, this "asado" dish you describe sounds suspiciously like what I know as "carne adovada", basically pork marinated/cooked in red chile. Tasty and addictive no matter what you call it!

HI Chap,
Thanks for the name update. I am now able to find this (similar anyway) dish in northern NM under "Carne Adovada".
I found some info;
Carne Adovada Recipe from Santa Fe School of Cooking
and
Carne Adovada « Kate in the Kitchen
There are some differences in recipe from the two. The S.E. NM Dish is made with NM Chili Pod Peppers and usullay only cooked down for 4 to 6hrs vs. the 24hr simmer for the Adovada dish.
With either dish I must quote cooknkate:
you cook it slowly until it is meltingly tender and so aromatic that it drives you just plain mad in your quest to stuff it shamelessly into your mouth; rich sauce dripping down your chin.
Which I find myself doing every time I eat this dish. LOL
Good Eats,
Toby 4cws dot com
P.S. Sorry for the long delay in reply. I don't make it to the forums very often anymore.

Papa Nacho on Louisiana and basically off of Paseo del Norte is divine. The staff is insanely attentive, the food is extremely fresh, and the environment is very friendly. You can't even find a piece of brown lettuce in your dish of choice! I think they now do breakfast on Saturdays. HIGHly recommend.
