Nelly's is awesome.....impossible to get into these days at lunchtime, but it's worth the wait. In Cruces I would agree that El Sombrero is great, there's La Posta in Mesilla, a new one in Mesilla called Los Mariachis (great more traditional Mexican food), but hands down, THE best Mexican food in southern New Mexico is Chope's in La Mesa!

Nelly's = lunch at 10:30 but it's well worth it. It's a close second but Chope's is the best. Eat in the bar.

Lately I've been eating at Ranchway and it's pretty good too.

I've eaten at Chope's too. I'd forgotten all about it. We went a few times on weekend nights with large groups, so there was always a long wait. It was good though! I'll have to remember it for next time we are in town.

Chope's is excellent. If you ever have the chance to stop in Los Lunas or Bosque Farms, Benny's Mexican Food is really good, like Sadie's used to be when it was in the Bowling Alley. Italian Restaurant? Check out Meemo's(sp?) on the corner of Sequoia and Coors in the strip mall behind Verizon. The spaghetti carbonara was awesome! Calzones are the best I have ever had. I think El Pinto is totally over-rated; quick fixed and bland. Nice setting but the food is lacking in every aspect.

Oh......I had forgotten all about Ranchway. Not only is their BBQ great but their Mexican food is pretty darn great too.

Default Alamogordo?

Just found this thread, so am slow in replying.

For good NM style food in Alamogordo, you need to try Alfredos. A little dive restaurant on 8th and Delaware (2 blks E of White Sands Blvd). Warning, their green chile chicken enchilladas are hot! I also like their meat burrito smothered with red chile and meat. For those that want it milder - the carnita burrito supreme.

Also, Casa de Seunos just 1 mi South of Tularosa is good. I like the flavor of the red chile. Their green chile isn't bad, but if you like more kick - go to Alfredos.

The Waffle and Pancake Shop next door to Dennys has great food with breakfast all day. Their green chile Huevos Rancheros are excellent. The green chile sauce is most flavorful. Their hash browns are great.

Some other non-mexican restaurant recommendations:
Memories at 1223 New York Ave - steaks, seafood, etc.
Compass Rose 2203 1st St, a brew pub type place
Caliches - great frozen custard

If you make it to Ruidoso - "The Great Wall" is a great chinese place.

And above all - in Las Cruces is Nellies. (6th and Hadley - one block off South Valley Drive) Open only for lunch. I highly recommend their green chile plate. Their red and green enchiladas are also good as well as their chile rellenos.

Thumbs up Eating in New Mexico!

My favorite subject about New Mexico...the food. Some of our favorites are:

Albuquerque: El Pinto, Church Street Cafe, and Monica's El Portal

Las Vegas: **** N Span (Charlies) on the square (breakfast/lunch)
Black Jack's Grill

Sante Fe and surrounding areas: Tia Sophia's, Tecolate, Horsemans Haven,
Tortilla Flats, Bacca, Santa Cafe, and in Galesteo, La Mancha.

Ruidoso: The Green Chili Cafe, Texas Club, the Italian place at the "Y" for
Green Chili Chicken.

Las Cruces: Way Out West, La Posta, Burrito house.

Just a sampling...there are TON's of good restaurants serving excellent New Mexican cuisine. We spend 6 weeks in NM every fall (for the chili roasting season) and our main entertainment (?) is eating out.

Yes Memories is good. Compass rose I have only tried the beer I think.
Caliches is good too.

Alfredos, The Waffle and Pancake Shop, I will have to try next time I am there.

I believe I did try Casa de Seunos (if it's the big place on the left as you go toward Tularosa). It was good, but no up to snuff compared to our local joints for less money. And the beer prices are high!

Robertos in las cruces I will have to try given all the recommendations.
