Default Gardens/growing veggies in South NM

Anyone in the LC/Deming area have a garden or grow your own veggies? What thrives and what doesn't? What plants are indigenous to the area? What about water - do you run a constant drip irrigation? How is the soil? Do you use your own compost?

Do any of the area farms have a "pick & pay" deal where you can go pick your own veggies and pay by the pound? Are your chiles really that good?!

I used to garden in So AZ and was able to grow a bunch of broccoli, cucumber, and pumpkin over the winter. In the summer everything turned brown and died, so I gave up. Interested in reading comparisons.

Default gardening forum

sounds like a good question for the Forums at gardenweb.com - they are very helpful and friendly there. They have forums by climate (Southwest), as well as by Type of Garden (Vegetable, Organic Gardening, Potager, etc.)
