I am looking for a destination for a long weekend away with a very special person, we are both outdoors people enjoy hiking biking etc.... Would like higher elevation but am open to anything, wish I could bring camping gear but will be flying in and not an option. Prefer less travelled areas so we can spend quality time alone with out much interferance, I have done weeks in the mountains ruffing it and she is ok with going a few days with out amenities. Also the $$$ has to be kept to the moderate range, and before I forget what time of the year would you recomend for the area you are suggesting?
Thanks you two, this is just perfect!!! I have sent for more info and will be ordering a guide or two on the hikes in that area. do any of you know where there are some of the hot springs off the beaten path that we might be able to enjoy? I did see that some people are going el-nude-o??
We will be going in Feb. so outdoor camping isn;t an option and we only have 3 nights 4 days together so any ideas of things to check out doing day hikes would be appreciated, this little has already been a huge help so thanks again!!!
You might get any kind of winter weather in the mountains in Feb. Silver City is probably your best better, as it is a little warmer down there... and if you are lucky it can be quite nice. Several hot springs are nearby, and plenty of places to hike.
If you are flying in to ABQ, consider the Jemez mountains. They're much closer than the Gila (although the Gila is definitely fabulous.) Jemez has great hot springs, incl some you can ski/hike into, x-country skiing and even some stargazing with a huge telescope in the Valles Caldera. You could stay in a B and B or hotel near Jemez or in Los Alamos. Bandelier cliff dwellings are right nearby too. Do an easy loop from ABQ to Jemez to Los Alamos to Santa Fe and back to ABQ.
The Pecos mountains are also near ABQ and Santa Fe and have wonderful hiking and x-country skiing.
