I'll bet Oklahoma is right there with New Mexico! On the news a couple of weeks ago, they said 1 out of every 5 drivers in Oklahoma is uninsured. (Don't know where they got their statistics, either.) They said to count the cars when you 're out driving. 1, 2, 3, 4, no insurance. We did that for a few days. Wow! That's alot of cars! Sure made us think! My friend has had 3 accidents in the past few weeks--2 of them not her fault. All 3 other cars had insurance (& so does she!), so we were joking that the next accident would be the uninsured motorist. Really, it's not that funny...

Well that is very odd.
I registered my car in eastern NM about 3 mos ago and they demanded to see proof of insurance, a photo ID, my social security card as well as two utility bills.
Why the inconsistency?

You hit a point here where it almost pays not to purchase yourself, because, as I see it, I am paying inflated rates for not only my car, but the uninsured motorists pool. In other words, I am personally compensating, through finances, for someone else's bad decision making.

Yep, me, too....I even took my birth certificate...and they went outside to go over my car with a fine tooth comb.

Yes. You/we are.
The same thing happens with homeowner's/medical/whatever else-insurance, too. It happens not only in NM, but TX and other states.
An uninsured's home burns to the ground (happened recently in Midland, TX) by his own fault, and they start whining to the community for help. There were at least 2--if not 3--families living in the mobile home.
Happens all the time. They had bought the mobile home LAST year, and "were in the process of getting insurance", but never finished doing so.
My patience is absolutely threadbare with all of this, so I hear you.

But that begs the question: are illegals a substantial portion of the uninsured, or are good old-fashioned irresponsible New Mexicans the majority of those?

So where's YOUR source, Zoid....?
|
Do you mean percent of illegals in general or percent of illegals who buy homes?
MY source is statistical data culled from government websites. Further, when you state "many" instead of "most" or "all", there's very little burden to back it up with statistics, since "many" could still be a very small minority.
A rule I like to follow is that whenever you say definite yet controversial things about the world around you, you always have a statistic to back up the argument. Questioning the questioner without doing that just looks pompous.

So in other words you are not going to really answer the simple logical question to how you came up with the conclusion

Many illegals do open bank accounts, and buy homes using traditional American financing. Doing the latter without carrying insurance doesn't happen.

It's just something you blurted and there are others curious of the facts. I would have also liked to have seen the facts.

And rarely is not acceptable, huh?
You have obviously never lived anywhere near the border.
Nice dodge, Zoid.........I'm glad your sources are so impeccable.
I meant, "What percentage of illegals who buy homes actually buy them through standard financing?"
Questioning the questioner without doing that just looks pompous.
You yourself wrote the book on "pompous," Zoid.

Simple and logical the question wasn't.
I asked for a source for

and was met with silence. I cited a counterexample, and now it's incumbent upon only me to cite a source?

I too would like to see better numbers. That's why I asked for them.
I'm not sure exact government statistics are available, but I did find links:
Illegal Immigrants Buy Real Estate and Get Mortgages with ITIN
Embracing Illegals
Many Illegal Immigrants Becoming Homeowners With Legal Mortgages - Originator Times (http://originatortimes.com/content/templates/standard.aspx?articleid=2202&zoneid=5 - broken link)
Seems to me if more than three major mortgage banks offer it, there must be a demand for it. Likewise, can't imagine there'd be far more illegals buying homes with straight cash; if they had the money to do that, odds are they wouldn't be illegal.

That's kinda funny that you should say "rarely ever", but it's my job to come up with a source when you refuse to.

Ahh yes.. the "I know you are but what am I?" response. I rest my case.

You are always getting on someone's case about not citing sources, yet you don't always do it yourself. That was my whole point.
OK. Whatever.
