Mountainair (Albuquerque, Alamogordo, Socorro: real estate, rent, work)

Would like to hear any comments, good or bad, concerning this small New Mexico town.

Outsiders (seen as carpetbaggers) have trouble being accepted by the locals.

Why anyone would pick Mountainair vs. another NM town is beyond me. I didn't really see anything particularly redeeming about it.

Zoidberg, How did you come to this conclusion? Did you live there?

I don't live in Mountainair and have never visited there, BUT I do have a good friend who does live there and he loves it! He is retired, so finding work is not an issue for him. He also has lived in New Mexico for about 50 years or so. He chose Mountainair for its lower real estate prices (at least when he bought there several years ago) and quiet lifestyle. He is not the type who likes or needs big city lights, so an occasional trip to Albuquerque is more than enough for him. He seems quite content in Mountainair and will probably live out his days there. One of these days, I would like to visit that area and look him up.

Mountainair and Carrizozo are on our short list of towns to investigate. Socorro with the university and a couple of high tech industries is currently leading the list.

Socorro is almost like day and night from mountinair. One has a college and
the other has a few nice views and almost nothing else from what I can tell.
I don't live in either one but I am in socorro very often, including yesterday
and I drive thru mountainair every two or three weeks. I'm not sure that
socorro would amount to much if it wasn't for the college but mountainair
is just a little burg out in the middle of nowhere. It sounds like most of you
have more money than I do to spend on gas unless you are not picky about
the food you buy but mountainair would be about my last choice of a town
to move to. Food shopping in socorro is pretty good with a smiths and a walmart. Actually their food shopping is better than T or C but a Walmart
is coming there as well. Carrizozo is another town pretty much out in the
middle of nowhere but it is closer to some civilization. Alamogordo is not
all that far and it is not to far from Ruidoso which is very nice and quite expensive. It is mostly inhabited by rich texans. It probably would be good
to come and check these places out. I did before I moved here and I have
been here for almost 4 years but I am getting tired of the poverty. This is
about as bad as I have seen it before. If you can get by that and poor shopping you might like it. If you have to work and are not retired you really
need to brace yourself for making very low wages.

We have been through Mountainair. Cute little town but not much there if you are still working. Seems like a good place to live for people who like to be in a quiet place.

Quaint little towns get old quickly when the corruption and desperation start showing. I looked at several places in Mountainair before choosing Carrizozo. Very disappointed here and not thinking Mountainair would have been better. I go through Soccorro frequently [on my way to ABQ] and have several friends in that county. I think the diversity and higher education of the population help tame the problems connected with growth. Check out the Mountain Mail newspaper online They often add a different view to things.

Mountainair has a large 400+ lot development going in which I believe will alter the town somewhat. The food shopping should improve.

Of course it is out there a ways but a lot of people like that.

Lots of wildlife I suspect.

I always see the potential in a place and I believe this area is on the verge of
fairly substantial growth relative to the past.

I just passed through Mountainair about one week ago and it always
seems friendly but I was buying gas and food so it's hard to say. The
people seem very clicky and seem to shun outsiders but I think it can
be that way in almost any little town. I think you have to go there and
check it out and stay for a few days and try to talk to a lot of the locals.
If you think you might fit in with the people there you might be set. It
is quite a trip to better shopping though. I would guess it would be
albuquerque or socorro. Remember gas is high in New Mexico.
