Yes I know. I am thinking many of those newcomers don't realize the harsh winters up there in the Red River area and it may return to a small town again! I am sure though many just bought or built summer homes and won't live there in the winter, if not, I hope they are hardy!

Between seasons
My favorite time to go to Red River is just about now, or a few weeks from now (late Sept - early Oct). It's very quiret and peaceful, the weather is great, the leaves are turning, and one can go to the Wild River Gorge west of Cerro and be the only one there (a beautiful place). Misanthropic as I am, I love it that way. The only thing wrong with it is that some of the places in town that I'd like to visit aren't open, especially the pinball arcade, but it's a small price to pay.

It really is beautiful in the fall all through that area. Have you been down Highway 96, Youngsville, Coyote and Gallina? It is really scenic. Not many people either!

Coyote, NM photo
Wow, that is a gorgeous photo! I've never been on Highway 96 before, although I have taken 84 up through Tierra Amarilla and Chama and on into CO. It is pretty country and very isolated. I'll need to explore Highway 96 next chance I get.

Cracker Jack, Thanks for the great pics, keeps me enthused , the housing market is slow and were waiting to sell then come to NM , can't wait. I am considering comming first to work and bring my wife before we sell our place . We just ordered a bunch of Organic seeds for our Victory Garden, so i might have to stay and eat some !

Greenmon: CrackerJack has been off the forum for at least a year, unfortunately. I think he moved to Durango, CO. I love Red River too, but I don't know whether I'd like the winters all that much. It's great to ride around that area on a motorcycle in early autumn, though. I'm planning to move to Southern NM.

Red River is a beautiful area. Years ago, my sister and brother-in-law had a three-story house up there, and we had some grand times in the area. My b-i-l retired at 55 and almost right away, he became ill with a brain deterioration disease (not Alzheimers). Anyway, he died 6 years later in 2000. My sister had to sell the place. My son was just mentioning the other day that all of the family should have chipped in and paid the expenses on the house so my sister could have kept it. My children have fond memories of Red River and that too cool house as well.
It would be a little too cold for me to live there and too touristy too, not to mention the real estate is probably through the roof by now. When they bought the house, it was only $80,000.
I have some friends who frequent Angel Fire and are planning a potential retirement in an area they really like called Mora. They mentioned it hadn't gotten touristy, at least not yet.
Anyway, Red River is lovely. I especially enjoyed it in the summertime and of course, the Fall when the Aspens colored the forests. It's a little slice of heaven for sure.
