Sounds like he might be just a teeny little bit too particular.
No place is perfect, but many places are very special regardless.

O.K. i just pieced it together why he is angry.............
First he mentions about the church group protesting the Gay Bookstore in Alamo (shocked that one exists there) then over to the Santa Fe post he stated he hates Santa Fe because there are no Gay bars (shocked that none exist there).
All i can say is best of luck to him in his endeavors.........

There are a lot worse things things than being 'bored'. I'm good at making my own entertainment (playing musical instruments, amateur astronomy, reading, ham radio, etc.), so I wouldn't get bored easily. Besides, there are a lot of interesting places nearby.
If I move there, I hope I can find a place to play bass and tuba occasionally, though. That's how I make my living here in Ft Worth.

Blondman sounds like someone from Hollywood who was disappointed that the locals didn't patronize him. Critics are a dime a dozen - anyone can be one.
I've visited Alamo twice, I thought the quiet was refreshing - the views great - to be able to see mountains without being blurred by the CA haze was quite a novelty - the fresh crispness of the blue skies - so much natural beauty! Of course, if one's mind is made up to be disappointed how can one help but to be disappointed.

well, i feel complelled to chime in here with my extensive 7 months experience of living in Alamo
although Blondman has suceeded in ruffling some feathers, he has an accurate point regarding the thick overtones of religion and that should be a consideration of anyone thinking about coming here. yes every town has it's religion, but here it hits you hard in the face. he did not exagerate the number of churches, billboards, and other christian material that visually assaults you in almost every corner of town, even the grocery store. i had a salesman at the Yamaha dealer come up to me in a "10 Commandments" t-shirt he was wearing AT WORK. true, as someone pointed out, you don't have to go to church if you don't want to. however, if you live here you will be obliged to accept the local's church-centric lifestyle, and as you stated "when in Rome do as the Romans do"....well... anyway my point in dragging this up was to make you aware. i personally find it intolerable and am leaving in a few months. maybe it won't bother you tho.
otherwise yes, there are things to do here outdoors, but it is "small bites" that you may quickly tire of compared to the mountain areas of AZ, UT, or CO. however there is a nice sense of freedom here...a feeling like you can pretty much do what you want. the weather is interesting and tolerable. the thunderstorms are incredible to watch, the sky is clear blue, the air is crisp and clean, and the sunsets are awesome. and this place sure gets a lot of rain for a desert! you will have to travel to really get into the things i think you are looking for, but at least all the roads out of here are straight and flat!
if you are active duty xferring to Holloman you will be in a good position to explore and get the most out of this place, as you know. i get the feeling you might be as you seem to be "on your way" here and you asked about a nightlife.
good luck to you

As someone who moved here from New Jersey also, all I have to say is to be prepared for the initial shock, from the time the plane touches down in El Paso till when you drive up Rt 54 to see nothing in view for distances half the width of New Jersey. Then be even more shocked to see the dilapidated trailers by Boles Acres about 10 miles before you get to White Sands Boulevard. I remember that drive vividly, it was over 2 years ago now. My wife was horrified, and said she couldn't live there. So it was off to Las Cruces for us. Interestingly, as we've driven through the city over the past 2 years, she's become less 'offended' by it. New Jersey is a very unique state. It's the most affluent state in the country, and the most suburban. Most of the country is not laid out like New Jersey. If you've lived there your entire life, you will have a false perception of the U.S.A. at large. The more I live in this great state, the more shocked I am when I make the very occasional visit back to the East Coast. One final note, I worked at Holloman AFB for over a year, and most of the civil employees were from Alamogordo. They were some of the nicest, down to earth individuals I've had the pleasure of knowing. Every single one of them belonged to a church, so yes, religion is prominent, and it's overt. In New Jersey, people go to church, but it's more laissez faire.

We have moved all over the world with the military, and when I go on vacation, I come back to Alamogordo area! There are hiking trails everywhere and history at your door!

We spend a couple of days in Alamo and kind of liked the place. If I needed work after I retired I would really consider the town. If you want to know about the roads to the mountains check out 6"3's video. If you want to know about nightclubs I cannot help you because what little drinking I do is at home. That being said wherever there are more than 200 people there is a bar and a night drinking/entertainment scene. For example there is a bar at the junction of Rt 23 & Rt 26 west of Las Cruces.
