Hi TKO,
Yes it's a Spanish "J". It was my grandmother's maiden surname. Jara is a Sephardic (Shepherd of Spain) name and was identified by the Catholic Church as a Jewish surname. My ancestors fled Spain during the inquisition for Turkey and later Salonika northern Greece.
Your right about the wood under the eves. I like the straight lines of it.

I think your right. Many territorials have a flat roof and that silver (I expect it's corrugated tin) roof makes a difference in look. There was limited materials in the late 1800's, being what was available locally in the way of timber, adobe and stucco, etc. and what was probably brought in from St. Louis on the Santa Fe trail like metal products. My guess is that the pitched metal roof was somewhat of a status symbol in that it had to be imported and required more cost by way transportation and framed rafters vs. natural vigas.
Just my thoughts though, I'm not an expert on the subject.

I'd been thinking "Hara" when I saw your user name so I'm glad I was right Jara! That was an interesting story too!

And those same pitched metal roofs in the northern parts of the state would function well as snow roofs!

transplanted to Raton
Here are 2 photos of the sunset tonight. The whole sky looked like it was on fire on the southern part and to the north was beautiful pink and blue. Truly a spectacular sight. It just keeps getting better, everyday that I'm here.

Not Texans (at least they shouldn't). Maybe West Texas, but that's different.
