TMcCollough is on a distinguished road
Default Visitor on 3/31/2009

This guy paid me a visit on Tuesday checking out the yard. He was quite aggressive, as in tearing of a few strips of wood from the RR ties lining the yard. He then jumped up on the fence and started surveying his surroundings. As I clicked off a few frames he took notice of the "click" and tried to imitate it and would slowly puff up each time. I started to wonder if this click was some kind of mating call they use and he was trying to look handsome for a mate. Anyone know that much about Roadrunner mating rituals?

Road Runners are the member of the Cuckoo Family and they make a "Clicking" sound. They are inquisitive at times. I usually see them in the heat of the day. I have seen them with lizards in their beaks and baby birds. They can be agressive at times, perhaps when you approach their nests which I have never seen but are possibly in large bushes. They many times puff up like the above photo to perhaps warm themselves up in the sun when it's cold and possibly some type of mating ritual. I have seen them puff up and make their clicking/ratcheting sound when in the area of other Road Runners. I have seen them in groups of up to four birds. That's my experiences.

Some people here in T or C feed the roadrunnners raw hamburger. Other people who camp out in Elephant Butte Lake State Park feed the javelinas dollar store dog foods. And, of course, we have the bird feeders too.

I'm a person who doesn't feed wild animals, I believe it's sort of a bad practice to get into.

Mutz,

I do understand not feeding the wild life. I have no real excuse but I just like seeing the deer in my back yard. I am originally from the Chicago area (no deer) and for the past 30 years live in the desert (Tempe, AZ-no deer) so it quite interesting to see deer in my back yard. That's my only excuse.

Don't know where this thread got detoured to feeding wild animals. Short and sweet it's not a good idea. I have a feeder for the finch's but have a hard time putting it where the squirrels can't figure it out.

A beautiful spring day in New Mexico, perfect for jeepin' and rock hounding. Photos taken near Hatch, New Mexico, our chile' capital of the world. The boulders in the third photo are just covered in druzy quartz.
