Cinco de Mayo in the historic Mesilla Plaza.
Old Mesilla was part of Mexico until 1854, when the Mexican flag was taken down and the Stars & Stripes hoisted up the flagpole, concluding the Gadsden purchase, or Tratado de Mesilla, as it's known in Mexico. So Mesilla takes the opportunity to celebrate it's close ties to Mexican culture on the 5th of May, and otherwise vague holiday celebrating the Battle of Puebla. To most Americans, this holiday is simply a reason to visit a Mexican restaurant and down Cinco de Margaritas, but in Mesilla it's a day to remember history and culture. It's a family celebration...no drinking or smoking on the Plaza....but lots of fun.
