Antelope between Portales and Roswell, watch for these instead of looking out to the sky for flying saucers! Southeast Portales is one of the prettiest neighborhoods in eastern New Mexico, and one of the safest too.
I just wanted to compare these two cities..although Clovis is much bigger I want a general opinions abt the places..what makes the other place better or worse than the other..Clovis residents shop in Portales for vehicles and Portales residents shop in Clovis for everything lol jkjk ..But have notice there is much hate among these two sister cities that lie 17 miles apart, share Cannan Air Force Base, and work at the South West Cheese Plant lol..But long time residents, former residents, and military families please answer ..What City would you pick and why???

I wont take that too seriously jkjk But I would have to choose Clovis over Portales just cus it has a city feel to it..Portales is tooooo boring..You will see the same ppl at the store all the time..Clovis has abt 40,000 ppl and Portales abt 15,000 its a big difference in town terms but Clovis is way more modern..with whole lot more places to shop from..but its just my opinion!
Clovis has a few nice parts in the far north side about 30 minutes from Cannon, but about half of Clovis and all of the area near Cannon is crime-infested, dumpy and dirty. Portales is smaller, safer, cleaner and better educated but only 15,000 versus 30,000 people.
The south half of Clovis is NOT SAFE at night. Do NOT get out of your car at convenience stores or ATMs on Mabry Street in Clovis after dark, although on Prince Street north of Llano Estacad you are safe. There are also a large number of vicious gangs in Clovis, including Crips and Bloods from Texas. You will not see this in the paper, but Plains Medical Center employees will tell you honestly that they treat kids every other day who are beat up and stabbed in gang fights in Clovis. Stabbings, meth dealers, and other issues make south Clovis very scary.

Portales has a much safer environment, prettier downtown, better schools, very little crime, better educated citizens, and Eastern New Mexico University with all the benefits of a small college town (students, events, plays, concerts, lectures, classes, etc.). Poeple walk and bike in Portales. Portales schools are brand new and school safety is much higher than in Clovis (less gangs, less fighting between races, etc.). The university offers advanced placement classes for Portales high school kids and one of the top campus child developmebnt centers in the region for pre-K. There is an awesome recrteation center class schedule in Portales and a country club for golf, a new swimming pool at the park, and no gangs or drug addicts hanging around like in Clovis parks.
Having said this, rthere are some podunk aspects of Portales, and not always the fastest service, but most of the servers at least finished high school and wash their hands, which you don't always see in Clovis restaurants.
As far as shopping goes, most Portales people would rather drive the extra hour to Lubbock (89 miles taking Highway 202 north of town) to shop, where it is cleaner, safer and where you have real culture, and all the really nice stores and restaurants that are far better than in Clovis. Cannon people who live in Portales can drive 12 miles to the base, shop in town and in Lubbock, and never have to even go to Clovis.

Every time I read your posts your bashing Clovis and talking abt ENMU..Clovis is not that bad really...I grew up on 6th and Connelly some believe its the center of the "ghetto" but its noth that bad..sure after 6pm everyone in south and west Clovis is in there porch, talking to one another, its just that is all there is to do..My girlfriends parents live in Colonial and I see the same thing there except in newer more modern homes..

I have a few really good friends in Portales and alot family in Clovis.I do not agree with this post at all. Maybe if you actually live in Clovis you probably dont understand how it really is. Portales 13,000 Clovis right around 35,000 so that is a huge difference of course Clovis is gonna have more crime..to me all of Portales looks like Clovis's south side just with a cleaner look..Enmu - half the students are from Clovis so dont get too cocky abt pvill..But the only thing I agree with is ENMU is a great school

Correction: ENMU students come from many states and countries, but MOSTLY come from New Mexico AND Texas, and mostly from rural towns, Lubbock, and Albuquerque.
