Default Live in El Paso!

Hi:
I formerly lived for years in El Paso, and Las Cruces before that. Now in Albuquerque.
While I enjoyed the smaller size of Las Cruces (about 75,000 now), it is just too far of a "rational" commute (probably at least 110 miles per day, round-trip from LC to Ft. Bliss itself.
I formerly lived in the Eastwood section, (find Eastwood High School on McRae Blvd...which runs between Montana St. (U.S.62/180 highway to Carlsbad, NM, and I-10.)

Both my neighbors worked at Ft. Bliss, one a Major in the army, the other in civil service on the base. "Far" east El Paso would be the place you'd want to live, with about a 20-30 minute commute to Bliss at most...and "away" from the downtown area.

Just stay east of McRae Blvd. between US62/180 and I-10...out to the "newest" eastern edge of town. Newest schools for your kiddos are out there too. J.M. Hanks is one of the newer high schools.

North of Ft. Bliss, (forgot the street name, maybe Dyer Blvd., (US54) anyway, there are some newer housing areas. Stay away from Chamisal!

The far west side (out NW of UTEP) has been growing also in recent years, so there are some very nice subdivisions close to I-10/Mesa Blvd. also. But, it would be a longer, and slower commute "through downtown," no thanks! I had to do that when commuting east side to UTEP....Gaaah!
I hope this helps. El Paso is not the prettiest community in the world, but most people tend to spend 90% of their time in their neighborhoods, and use area shopping, churches, etc. As such, there are nice neighborhoods in my area described.

The "Far East" (El Paso style) is the place to go.
Hope this helps a bit.

Thought I'd mention, if you take Ohare Rd (the Anthony Gap) from Cruces it's about a 45 mile drive and takes you 45 minutes, depending where you start of course. You can do a solid 70 the whole way, there's no heavy traffic. There's a gate off Fred Wilson. I've been taking that way to the airport for years, and it's much faster than going through downtown during rush hour for sure. That doesn't solve the cost of gas problem though.

Default Depends on tastes

Depending on what your lifestyle and tastes are in choosing a home. El Paso has some nice homes, Santa Teresa and Las Cruces have nice homes and all offer different lifestyles. I would stay away from Chaparral and Anthony though.

Thanks everyone for the incoming information. It's a lot to wrap our brains around. We are exploring all of the options. I'm not one to jump in (especially with two small kids) willy nilly, so to speak. Never have to worry about becoming a professional gambler!
Anyway, I am curious though, what are you guys in the area paying for gas?
Here in MD (30 mi outside of Baltimore) I just payed $2.73 at a wholesale club (kind of like Costco)
thanks again,
Nece

We are a good deal higher in Las Cruces. Gas at most stations just started dipping under 3 dollars a gallon. Most are in the 2.97 to 2.99 range as of July 26th (today).

+I live in the community of Chaparral and my family loves it here (20 yr resident)It is close to Fort Bliss 15 minute drive, alot of Sivilians live here. The taxes are cheap and you can buy a big property for that ammount of money. Their is a new subdivision in Delara Estates brand new homes with 1acre of land for that ammount of money. We have a brand new high school and everyone seems to get along, no one gets in your business. So it might be something you might want to look at.
