Our trip to Timberon/Alamogordo/Ruidoso
We just returned from our new home in Timberon last night after being in the area for a week.
After spending a couple of days cleaning the house up, we got to enjoy the area. The man who previously lived in the house, left some hummingbird feeders. We didn't know anything about feeding hummingbirds and didn't have internet so we could search how to but we went down to Josies market, (only grocer in Timberon) to pick up something we forgot and happened to say something to her about the hummingbirds. She told us a recipe and we went back and fed hummingbirds the whole week.
The deer coming into our yard while we sat on the porch everyday and evening was remarkable. I did give one a piece of bread and then felt guilty about feeding the wildlife. Some of the people in the area are all for feeding the animals and others are totally against it. I'm in the middle somewhere. I realize it's not a good thing to do but the other part of me wants to nurture them. I did it only one time anyway.
I felt like I was in fantasyland. The weather is gorgeous. It was in the 60-70 range and one morning had to turn on the heater to get the chill out of the house. I thought that was funny to do in July but I do love the weather. Texas is getting a little too humid for me now so I enjoyed no humidity in NM.
We met a few people, one of them being Jane's (chilegal) husband. We walked to his house one day and chatted for quiet a while. He has a great handshake and a very likeable man. He came to our place a couple days before we left with his ATV and we all chatted some more plus he gave me a lesson in ATVing and I went down the road in it and back. Scary at first, because I've not driven anything other than a car and truck and my sig other rides a motorcycle and I ride on back with him but the ATV is a fun little toy and we are going to look around and get one in the future. It seems to be the necessary thing to have to get around Timberon. Also went up to the lodge and had a green chile burger. Very good.
We also went to Alamogordo and Ruidoso. My first time in Alamo. Beautiful scenery. We checked out walmart, home depot and lowes and bought a lawnmower at lowes.
Ruidoso of course is also beautiful but also touristy. Lucys mexicalli restaurant is one we enjoy.
If anybody reading this is thinking about moving to Timberon/Alamo/surrounding areas, check it out and you will be totally amazed.
We are hoping to sell our place quickly here in Texas and get back to Timberon/surrounding areas.

Hey, great to read your post, Cheryl. You'll have to stop by the house when I am finally settled!!
My house here went under contract the 25th, so keep your fingers crossed that all goes well. The movers are coming to load me on the 7th....I will have at least 2 more--if not 3--trips, on getting the dogs there...and I'm going up Aug 1 or 2 with a load of breakables and fragile stuff!!!
I cannot imagine it taking very long to sell your home, but I guess it all depends on the market. Ours here is very tight, which is why I went ahead and planned my move when I did.
I'm really, really looking forward to all of this, and time is really, really, REALLY dragging right now, LOL!!!
Which lodge are you talking about? There is one in Timberon? I can't wait to see Timberon, High Rolls...and to revist CC and Ruidoso. I haven't seen CC for 40+ years.....and I haven't been to Ruidoso since 1986.
On the deer? No, I would NOT feed them. They're pretty to watch, sometimes, but they can be annoying pests who eat everything that isn't nailed down or unattractive to them!!!! LOL!!

Cheryl,
Glad you made it back to Tx safe. Kent really had a good visit with you and Charlie. I can't wait to meet you. this trip to IL is not my favorite thing this time of year. When you get the ATV for up there be sure its a 4X4. You will need it in the snow. Its fun going out then too.
Did you go to the lounge? They have great GCCB and very filling. The lodge in Timberon is closed right now.
Did you find the waterfall??? Its really hidden.
As for the deer, they get scraps of lettuce and other veggies from me. I hate throwing it in the trash. Now I do not feed the elk and the Mt lion. Kent has run into elk out near the water tower and the Mt lion has come around the house. We invaded their lands.
And thanks for telling Kent where to take the laptop to to get internet. He sent me pictures today. Works great. Its funny, I go to the water tower for cell phone and the fire station for internet. I do not want to get a land phone..
Cathy will be coming up to Timberon with us sometime to meet all and know where she can get to if its to hot down below..
Hope the house sells fast!
Jane

Hi Jane,
Thanks for the pictures. Makes me wish I was still there. I miss the weather too. So humid today in Texas.
We did not see the waterfall. We did see a waterfall coming into Timberon and walked to it but not the same one you told us about.
Charlie is at work today and also researching atv's. lol
We enjoyed Kent. Very nice man and atv teacher.lol
The 3 of us joked around and talked what it takes to be a mountain man/woman and came up with a few things. I have a lot to learn but it can be done.
We had a safe trip back home but it turned into a 14 hour trip. We had a flat tire before we left Sat. morning. Charlie changed it with our spare and then we had a tire blowout on the front tire near Ft. Stockton. This happened about 2 in the afternoon. We didn't have another spare and we were on the hwy. We got towed into Ft. Stockton which apparently doesn't have a lot of businesses open on saturday. The tow guy drove around and finally the 6th place he went to was open and we went ahead and replaced all 4 tires with new ones.
I was just thankful we made it back to Fredericksburg safely.
That I guess was a sign from the universe saying not to leave Timberon. Lol, but have to finish up business here first.

Harry,
My husband came down the Mt yesterday and at Cathy's canyon there was a light SNOW. It didn't stick, but there it was for a short time... I wish I was there to see it - in July.
New Mexico gives you variety thats for sure.

WOW ....now thats just too cool !! Yeap i know that any time we go up to cloudcroft in july/aug and it rains you have to wear a light jacket as it can chill up there especially at nighttime. I just think its funny as people (including my family back east) think that living in Alamo is like living in Phoenix. So yeah its nice to live in an area that sometimes has 4 seasons in the same day so to speak of.....
