Silver City and like environs
Hi - My wife and I are heading to NM this weekend to look for a retirement home. We are not interested in a large city or senior development, but would like a home on an acre or two. So far Silver City with it's size, altitude, weather and somewhat green environment, sounds very nice. Are there more areas like this in NM? Although we'll start our visit in Silver City we certainly wouldn't mind seeing other attractive areas too..
Thanks - Bob

Looked for a long time. . .
All I can say is read these NM threads, very informative. I was born in NM, traveled there many times after I moved, and am retiring (at least partially) in Alamogordo next month. I didn't want to small or too large a city, it's about 40,000 or close to it. It's close to the mountains (Cloudcroft), fishing, golf, skiing, about whatever you want to do. Great climate, (flash floods periodically - check neighborhood) but all in all a nice, safe town. Read the responses when you search for Alamogordo. Silver is nice, read the threads. Will contact you when I get there, let you know, sure it will be a thumbs up.

Take a couple of weeks or a month and just drive around the state. there are way too many places to describe in a short post on this board. Three years ago we drove from Socorro to Alamogordo to Las Cruces, Deming, Silver and around Rts 180 & 12 back to Socorro. Saw way too many places we loved.
Next trip will cover the northwest part of the state. So far the area around Socorro offers the best combination of things we want but there may be a better area. We are still looking

I really liked the climate around Silver City when I lived there, so I looked around to find other cities in the west that had similar climates. Silver City is great because it is still relatively cheap to live there, but other cities to look at with similar weather and terrain would be Prescott AZ, Ashland OR, Baker City OR. If you need to find a job and have to move to a bigger city, Boise ID has very similar weather to Silver City and is where the high desert meets the mountains just like Silver City.

If you happen to be in Silver, I'll help you with finding the right home and area that will suit you best. I love showing people around this great town. It's my profession. I also teach 3 choir classes in the morning, so afternoons are always free.
