Hobbs is not that bad. I wouldn't mind living there again. I grew up and attended public schools there and still have friends there with kids in public schools. Just keep an eye on your kids and they will be fine. Hobbs has more amenities than any city within an hour of there. Overall the people are friendly. I guess it just depends on what you're used to. There is crime everywhere--Hobbs included. However, I wouldn't let that alone keep you from moving there if you otherwise like the city.

My name is David L Landrum Jr. I grew up in hobbs and i will tell you right now i am 24 years old and the crime rate is high the gangs are bad and it is no joke living in a city that only holds 25000 people witha crime rate as high as the other most dangerous cities in america. the difference is in detroit its cold and huge and going from one side to the other is nearly impossible for a violent criminal in hobbs its flat dry and hot it takes 15 mins to go anywhere you want which makes you accessible to anyone wanting to get at you be careful its not a fun city oilfield gambling and now nuclear waste recyclibg choose wise!!!

I was raised in Hobbs, and have wonderful memories of growing up there. I think Hobbs is a great place to live and will root for it until I know otherwise. Some of the best people in the world live there, and they are teaching at the public schools and running local businesses and at your local church. There is a pretty active social life, that I think exceeds that of any other small town. It is a family town, and the businesses all seem to prosper. I think God loves Hobbs, it needs some people speaking up for it instead of cursing it. I loved it.

Default Relocating to Hobbs

I am relocating to Hobbs and I am trying to get an apartment before i move next weekend.
I am looking for a very safe neighborhood, preferably a "newer" apartment complex (all the ones I have seen online seem to be old). I know there are several Texas towns very close to Hobbs and don't mind commuting as long as I get what I'm looking for. Can anyone recommend a good and relatively new complex?

I won't deny that there is crime in Hobbs but it has not affected me. The area in Southeast Hobbs where my grandparents lived when I was a kid was a nice neighborhood. I wouldn't consider living there now. From the cener of town north doesn't seem much different from any other suburban area in anywhere, USA. There are a lot of nice neighborhoods and businesses. The population is about half Hispanic but everyone speaks English other than some newcomers. You may be responsible for your own entertainment if you're an adult without kids. The high school football culture of this area is the subject of the movie Friday Night Lights. Yes, there is a sky everywhere but if you enjoy stargazing/ amateur astronomy the skies are outstanding. Most of New Mexico's land is open to the public unlike many states. I have seen a lot of posts talking about how flat it is here. While it is not big, rolling hills or monutains, it is not flat. The area is primarily broad, gently rolling hills. The immediate city is pretty flat as is the terrain to the northeast. As you drive away form the city in any other direction it goes from more rolling hills to rugged country pretty quickly. I love the countryside here.

Having lived in many climates, I find the weather and climate here pretty pleasant once you get past the stiff winds and blowing sand in the late winter and early spring. It can snow here but it usually isn't on the ground very long. As a kid I remember white Christmases and Christmases when we were out in short sleeves. It's a bad place if you don't like lots of sunshine. There are days when it is very hot. At 95-98 degrees F it's not too bad unless you're doing heavy labor in the heat. With the low humidity you can comfortably sit in the shade in the breeze with a cool drink and carry on a pleasant conversation. I can't say the same for 88 degrees F in the humidity of the Texas or Louisiana Gulf Coast humidity. Once it gets past 101-102, it's just hot. The evenings cool off pretty quickly, again due to the low humidity. In the summer it is usually 68-72 degrees at sunup. Shortly after sunset you can sit outside comfortably on all but the hottest of days. Misting systems are popular on patios and they offer great relief from the heat.

Although the population has grown as of 2011 to about 38,000 shopping, as mentioned is limited. The major name stores include WalMart, K-Mart, Radio Shack, Home Depot and Lowe's. The Internet is your friend here. The city has great pride in community and it shows in the architecture of the recent government builds, new parks, walking trails and beautification projects. In the summer there are public movies on friday nights at one of the city parks, music at the arts center in the middle of down town and farmer's market on scheduled weekends. Someone critisized the juxtaposition of the prison, casino and airport. The "airport" was a WWII training facility which was officially closed in the '50s but has never gone without some sort of use. It has been turned over to the city and no longer has any military buildings. It now has a beautiful golf courseand public campground, the headquarters of the Soaring Society of America, a gliderport, a sanctioned drag strip, rifle, pistol and shotgun shooting ranges and a model airplane field. There is a commercial and general aviation airport on the Carlsbad Highway.

Outdoorsmen will find an abundance of antelope and mule deer in the immediate area and a variety of big game across the state. There are alot of quail in the area as well. There are a few lakes within reasonable driving distance and the Pecos River in nearby Carlsbad which is kept at a constant level by a series of dams.

Sorry I can't paint the same grim picture that some have. I am an amateur astronomer and enjoy other outdoor activities. Housing is expensive and the selection is limited. I'm in the process of buying a house right now and find the prices to be much higher than in other areas.

I was born in Hobbs, left New Mexico when I was in grade school and lived in a lot of places. My siblings and I came back to stay with our grandparents in Hobbs and Carlsbad until we got to the age of having summer jobs. I always missed New Mexico and am happy to be back.

I hope this balances thngs a bit.

Question Husband got hired in Hobbs nm help please

My husband just got hired in Hobbs nm as a firefighter and will be working 24 hr shifts. We looked around Hobbs via online for 3 bdr houses/townhomes for rent and apartments with no luck. Can anyone suggest any 3 bdr apts in the area? We were thinking of possibly living in odessa/midland and then having him commute since he only works 10 days a month. Whats the drive like, how long does it usually take? We have children, what would e a better option with kids hobbs or odessa/midland. We plan on buying a house in a year but we want to get a feel for the area first. Thank you!
