Mountainair would be my pick from a climatological perspective. Clayton is hot in the summer, a lot like Amarillo and Dalhart in Texas. I've never been to Corona, but I think it's out in the eastern plains, so it probably is too.

Corona is actually in hilly country. I've been through there a couple times so I cont comment much but I beleive that the climate would be close to Moutainairs. The hills in the area would be considered moutains by Texas standards, and are covered with Juniper, and Cedar trees.
Sorry I dont have too much info town wise for you though.

If you like small . . .
All thre of these are very small towns and remote from larger towns. Mountainair and Corona are both in wonderfully scenic natural settings. If you like the great outdoors and can do without creature comforts these places are beautiful. For me, they are nice places to stop on the way to camping and outdoor destinations, but would be hard to live in without going stir crazy.
I have never been to Clayton.

countryrush,
I am looking at those areas too. Hope you find what you want. I don't mind having to drive to ABQ once a month for something to see and do, providing there is enough shopping in Mountainair. If I find anything I will let you know.

There is nothing in corona or mountainaire. You would have to drive to belen if you lived in mountainaire. Probably Roswell if you lived in corona. Corona and Mountainaire both get cold and windy in the winter.

I grew up sort of near Clayton and have driven thru there on numerous times, and like the other posters mentioned it is very similiar to Amarillo, Texas..except it is a lot smaller. Good paying jobs are hard to come by, but for retirement reasons it might be a good town. Its mostly ranch-land and small town living with a great high school football town spirit. As for Corona, I drove thru there and stopped there numerous times on my way home from Las Cruces. It is a very small town with not very many amenities, the closest bigger cities are probably Alamogordo to the south and either Abq to the west or Las Vegas/Santa Fe to the north. Corona is known for its apple cider, they sell it on the side of the road there. My father actually has friends there who sell firewood for a living. Word to the wise...watch out for the deer! Oh, and I've never been to Mountainaire so I cannot comment on that.

Im a resident, and Tourism Director for Clayton and would like to direct you to our website on (broken link) for any information you require.
We dont tend to get as high as Amarillo, they usually stay a few degrees higher than us. School spirit is great here, football is big for the community.
We do have alot of people come here for retirement, for the low humidity etc. Jobs should be easier to come by in construction. We are about to start work on a 600 bed Jail that we are building a few miles out of town. The obviously there will be 200+ jobs at he facility when done. We hope there will be alot spinoff jobs in local business as a result.
We have many large events during the year too.
If you have questions you are welcome to call my office on 505 374 9253
