So after spending 9 months in Las Vegas, NM and completing my first year at NMHU, I can answer you query in very simple words. Yes Las Vegas, NM really IS that bad. I am so glad that I have transferred out to East Coast. But seriously, how can people even live in a place like Las Vegas, NM. I couldn't even find my favorite brand of hairspray or shampoo there, anywhere in the town. And trust me on this, there is NOTHING absolutely NOTHING to do for an average 19 year old college student.
By this post, I don't mean any offence to any ( specifically residents of Las Vegas, NM ) but just wanted to echo my thoughts regarding the place. Don't ever think of living there. I never really got a chance to travel around New Mexico as even when I had a few days off ( e.g. Labor's day weekend or other long weekends) I flew out to NY or Cali. So I can't really comment on what type of a state NM is but as far as LV goes, the less said the better.

You lost all credibility when you metioned your favorite brand of hairspray.

Now that is a bit of a stretch. I was born and raised in LV and still visit frequently. Property values in LV are not worth the damn. There are properties in LV that stay on the market for several years.

LV is a nice place to enjoy if you are considering retirement, and yes it has its problems but every city does. Unfortunatley, there are no jobs and the reason for the shrinking population.

Oh yeah did I forget to say the politics are completely screwed up in that town.

Default What is the real school situation in Las Vegas, NM?

Hello everyone! I've been lurking for a few months. I am currently living in Albuquerque, but have been offered a job in Las Vegas, NM, in the health profession. It's a good job offer. I've been visiting the town and it has some great property for sale at reasonable prices. It seems like a pretty town overall. Parts of it are rundown and seedy, but it looks like people are working on their houses in other areas.

My concern is the schools. I have heard about that terrible hazing incident in Las Vegas with the football team. From what I can gather together, it seems like the schools have serious problems. Anyone know anything about the Las Vegas schools?

I read this rant on a Las Vegas blog:

A Rant about the High Schools in Las Vegas, New Mexico | My Tiny Vegas: Las Vegas, NM, that is!

It really makes me nervous. I have a son who is going to enter the 9th grade this fall. If you live in Las Vegas or know people who do, would you recommend the east side or the west side high school? Or would you recommend I not take this job?

Thank you for any serious replies,
Lucky Eight

Ehhh.. Las Vegas has to be one of the worst places in the state. After a recent trip there people were not so friendly like most say and the crime is unbelieveable. Everyone says Espanola is bad, yea right, at least the people are friendly there..
It is also losing more people than any other city in the state.
