Thats great! It will be a good economic boost to the area. The job market is not the best in Las Vegas.

I don't know where the people who posted at the beginning are from but you certainly don't come from Las Vegas, NM. LAS VEGAS is a beautiful city. I raised 4 children here and now my grandkids all live here. The schools are great. I truly am happy to hear from people like JoRita & este. Now Julieann 07 I have my doubts. Anyway these people who posted negative reviews, WHAT A BUNCH OF CROCK! Moderator cut: removed personal commentary Our city is small, everybody knows everybody. I can tell you that I can go into any cafe, store and I will see good, honest, hardworking people there. Moderator cut: removed personal commentary Both East Las Vegas and West Las Vegas have great school systems. We have doctors, lawyers, Representative, great school teachers, counselors, professionals who have graduated from our schools. Many have chosen to raise their children here. I would never live anywhere else, I Love Las Vegas! The mountains around us, the lakes, the ranches. Just a few of the wonderful places. Moderator cut: removed personal commentary We have beautiful old homes and tree lined streets. The gangs, well there are idiots all over the United States who have no lives and think that belonging to a gang is where it's at. Poor souls, no family life. Moderator cut: removed personal commentary Steven M gave a pretty clear story of Las Vegas, he said he was in corrections so he sees all those aspects. Hopefully he is playing a part in trying to make things better. I ask the 20 year old person who would like to come to NMHU to come down. The campus is really nice, and if she makes friends with the right people (as should be done in any city) she could really learn a lot. If you are serious about your studies, come and enjoy a small hometown atmosphere. Someone said that the food was terrible, that is certainly not right. Otherwise our restaurants would be empty, try going to anyone of them at noon or night and you will meet the best people there. I just wanted to let the person who saw shacks and huts all over, you must have been elsewhere because we don't have shacks and huts and run down trailer parks. What we have are homes, being lived in by people who try to make an honest living. True the wages aren't very good but don't put people down by the homes they have. Did you drive in a Cadillac or a Rolls when you passed our beautiful town? Was it made out of glass, opps then beware when throwing stones. I will admit that there is a problem with drugs. Drugs are everywhere and everywhere that there are drugs there are great law enforcement officers trying to control the situation. Instead of criticizing try helping the problem. Moderator cut: removed personal commentary Your living environment is what you make of it. I invite anybody to come and see our beautiful town, talk to the people and have a good lunch and if you want to stay, do so you won't regret it.

If you really want to experience Las Vegas, wait until the fiestas kick off for fourth of July. Around the plaza, you will get to experience our food, music, and culture.

Default Teacher Moving To Las Vegas

Hello! I am planning on moving to Las Vegas. I got enough of cold people and cold weather in Jersey. I teach computer skills at private schools. Do I have a chance to make it in Las Vegas? I am hispanic too. Any advise will be appreciated.

Hi, ihertz.

I can't speak much on the demand for teachers in Vegas (I assume it's high just like anywhere else in the country), but as far as the general locale, if you're polite and have good common sense, you'll be fine. From my experience, the only ones who run into trouble in Vegas are the ones who put themselves in dodgy situations to begin with.

i don't blame you one bit, camesquibel.

i was born and raised in new mexico [farmington], but moved out of state for a number of years. then i moved back to new mexico [las vegas!] from 2000-2002.

it was very much a culture shock; i've never lived in a town where so many of the people were actually born in said town, rather than having moved there from somewhere else, and had every intention of spending the rest of their lives there.

it is a very run-down town in many areas, and it's an impoverished town. but over time i found myself liking it a lot. as a las vegas minority [anglo], the only rare occasions when i had any problems were at certain bars, and i have to admit that i went to some pretty rough ones. and even those situations amounted to some drunk trying to start something, who was taken to task by his buddies who apologized for their behavior.

highlands, on the other hand...unfortunately, that school is a basket-case. i wish it weren't, because i know that it used to have quite a good reputation. the politics and nepotism have really run it into the ground.

one other thing- las vegas is very close to some drop-dead gorgeous scenery. heading north toward mora, or northwest to hermit's peak [past patrick swazey's [sp?] ranch, there is some really beautiful country.

I just read through this entire thread, phew!

I live in Las Vegas. I've lived here my entire life. I have visited many other parts of the state but love Las Vegas best. I went out of town (Abq) for college and now teach at an elementary school here in town.

It's a gorgeous setting. We are right at the foothills of the mountains, and if I look out my bedroom I see Hermit's Peak and from the other direction I see the great plains.

Yes, it is a poor town. But I think that has saved it's amazing buildings.

If you want some great stories about Las Vegas, you have to read this blog called My Tiny Vegas. (http://mytinyvegas.com) It's written by a writer in town, and she nails the place. Read through her "Las Vegas articles." You will get a better sense of what it is to live here. It's not a black and white issue. We are poor, and we have some problems, but we also have a great spirit and a lot of fun. I have never had any problems with any crime.

I love Las Vegas!

I'm glad to see some positives here on Las Vegas. I like its elevation and the fact that it is close to so many ski areas: Sipapu, Red River, Taos, Angel Fire...and also close to other areas I love: Santa Fe and Los Alamos. All within easy driving distance for a day of skiing or sightseeing, et al.

You're also right about the drop-dead scenery. I love New Mexico!

I'm getting ready for a trip to Alamogordo. I may make another to Las Vegas, but not sure yet. I will look at housing and the areas once again to hopefully make the right choice for me. There are things that I like about all 3 places: Farmington, Alamogordo and Las Vegas. I have relo packets from all three, and they all offer different things.

Thanks for the post!! The blog is interesting!

Default schools in Las Vegas

Our family is moving to Las Vegas in about a month (yes risking our lives!) and we have been looking at the schools. We have two children who will be in 6th and 4th grade.
I've heard the talk about West vs East but we are actually more interested in the smaller schools of Family Partnership and Rio Gallinas.
Any info on these would be appreciated.
We are anglo (I always thought I was white, I must not be very PC) but I wouldn't want to send my kids to an all white school. But on the other hand I wouldn't want them to be the only white kids either (which I'm sure wouldn't be the case).

I must say that the times we've been to Las Vegas we have enjoyed it. The people have been friendly, the food has been good, and the scenery is beautiful.
A person I work with said she stopped to get gas in Las Vegas and got bad vibes. A gas station does not make a town.

I believe you get what you give. But of course you must use common sense.

Peace
