Bterrib, I forgot to tell you that Michelle is the one that spent the day with us showing us around. She is really a nice lady and has lived here for years.

Timberon and Surrounding Communities
Hello everyone. I've been reading the threads related to the communities of the Southern Sacramento Mountains with great interest. Lots of good information is shared. And, I can tell that friendships have been formed.
My sense is that the communities of Timberon, Sacramento, Weed, Mayhill, Cloudcroft, Pinon, Sunspot, Elk, High Rolls, and others, share a lot of the same interests and history, and have much in common.
I thought I'd start this thread to provide a place for everyone to share their thoughts about the doings in the Southern Sacramentos. And, to talk about whatever they'd like, or just to say Hello. Topics such as local history, what events are coming up and how they went, or what the kids are doing in school. Things like, "What's for supper?", or "how the trip to town went", interest me. If you don't want to start a new thread, maybe this is a good place to get an answer, or to help others. It should be fun.

I live in Timberon, spend a lot of time in Cloudcroft, and have been to Sunspot on several occasions to wander around the observatory. Other than that - I don't know much about our surrounding communities and would be interested in hearing the views of the residents up here in the Southern Sacs! Anybody from Bug Scuffle? Is there a story behind that name? Where is Elk?
As for Timberon, I am ecstatic to be living here after hot - dry - smoggy SoCal. It's tucked into a cleft of the mountains which seems to result in milder winters. Although, admittedly, I've only lived here for a little over 2 years and probably have not experienced the full circle of weather patterns, so far - so good!
I have seen deer, elk, wild turkey, bobcat, coyote, some kinda ringtail cat (kotamundi?), birds of prey, skunk, porcupine, and a million different kinds of butterflies. I have heard of, but NOT seen bear or mountain lion.
We have several local artists here (including me - heh) and It would please me to see Timberon develop into an artist outpost. Something unique and bohemian. Where the 'flatlanders' can come up the hill and enjoy the cool mountain air, have lunch at one of the 2 restaurants, play some golf, do some fishing, and then have a place to check out the local creations. Timberon makes for a great Day Trip!

For anyone interested in herbs, holistic medicine, there are several plants around these areas that can be used for medicinal purposes.
I didn't know that until about a month ago when a local Native named MedicineWolf filled me in on that.
Making teas, potions, healing meds, salves are an interest to me and whatever I can learn about this makes my day.
To go to certain places in Timberon and surrounding areas (if you want it to be) is like a spiritual experience. These are the places to connect to nature and Mother Earth.
We have a newbie coming into Timberon. Some have seen her posts (bterrib)
I think she and her family may have arrived here with the moving truck last night.
JDTH - talk some about Ruidoso.

Like songinthewind7 said. And, Ruidoso is surely a neighbor. Anyone is welcome to join in the conversation of course. I would not think of excluding anyone from sharing this thread.
Wow! Three posts and already some interesting stuff. FANTASTIC
songinthewind7, I'll have to learn more about the plants. I've learned some from old books about New Mexico history, but not much. My given Native American name is "Swirling Medicine Bow". So, I need to live up to the name.

I will soon, but today we have 20-30 people coming for lunch. My nephew in the Marines is in town and we are having a get together for him. Our house is the only one in the family big enough to hold 30 people. I don't know whose idea this was (wasn't mine - I would prefer about 6:00 p.m.) as it will be about 110 degrees today. I love to see Logan, but wrong time of day. I am cooking up a bunch of Carne Asada for the folks along with a pasta salad. Logan's dad is bringing a couple of subs. Should be fun, but hot.
We love Ruidoso and I will chime in hopefully tomorrow with a little bit of our history with Ruidoso.

The story of how I came to acquire the name "Swirling Medicine Bow" is simple, but meaningful to me. Years ago, I worked with a lady who was a a member of one of the Southwest tribes. We spoke about Native American issues from time to time, my being interested due to my native heritage. She was much more active in the activities of local tribes than I was.
She asked me some questions about my childhood relations with animals. I told her about some sad events concerning rabbits and how those events set me on the road of an animal lover. She decided that Rabbit would have been my name in a childhood tribal scene. And, that rabbits would have had some control over my destiny. This connection to a particular animal is determined by elders for each child when they are young, by tradition. In my mind it meant more than she could know to have someone of native blood relate these things to me.
It is also tradition for one to receive, in adolescence, a given name that is more representative of who you are. This is not something you choose for yourself. It must chosen by others. Some time later, she told me that she had thought about what name would suit me. I had not known it was on her mind. I won't go into why she chose the name, except to say she considered me to be one who has compassion for others. She said, she had lost a male cousin who meant a lot to her, who, she said, was much like me. She said it would mean a great deal to her if I would take his name in his memory. So, I am now "Swirling Medicine Bow" and very proud of it.
