I am planning to spend a week at Ruidosa in Feb of next year and I am worried about getting around in my toyota Rav4. Is there a place that rents snow chains?

It's Ruidoso, not Ruidosa and this is the Albuquerque Forum. You need to post your question on the New Mexico forum.

Isn't your Rav4 equipped with either 4WD or AWD? It may not snow the entire time you are there - but it could! And if snow chains would give you more peace of mind when it does snow, I don't know of anyplace that "rents" snow chains but there are several places to buy them. They aren't that expensive.

There is a 'Ruidosa' in Texas, but in NM it's 'Ruidoso'.

Default Ruidoso should be OK

More than likely, you don't need snow chains, if you're sticking to the main roads and mostly in town. Worst case is if you go up and down Angus Hill (toward Capitan/Nogal/Carrizozo), and generally if you let the sun do its job and you get off before the ice starts in (say between 1 and 4 pm) then you're fine. 1 major exception is if you plan to head up to Ski Apache, or up ski run hill. If there is a snow there, yes, you'll want to have chains, and also they do close the road as people start coming down (about 2 or 3 pm?). But you can also hitch a ride with the Inn Mountain Gods shuttle (they also run the ski resort)-and grab a great meal at the casino bar when you come back as well.

There are some remote areas they do not plow and there are some hilly roads in town that can be tricky, but your Rav4 should be ideal even if it only has front wheel drive, as you have the clearance. And they are predicting a low snowfall again this year (that's a bummer)

Have a nice trip here, great people, and a great choice to spend some time.

Ha! There actually is a Ruidosa, Tx. How do they pronounce it?

They pronounce Ruidoso, like it's Riadosa. I guess phonics never made it there...

You only might need chains if you are planning to explore roads that don't get plowed or want to drive on one of these roads that has >20% grade... more so if your Rav 4 is 2wd. I've been here for 5 years and never put on chains... and the first year when it snowed a lot I had a 2wd rwd pickup.

I doubt that there is a more isolated community in Texas than this place. Information here:
