IMHO - Just because a place is a scrub desert without spectacular cliffs etc does not make it boring. Just looking at the place and wondering how anything can live there can make it interesting. Rt 180 between Deming and Silver City is a prime example. I found the Plains of St Augustine on Rt 60 west of Socorro fascinating even without the Very Large Array Radio antennas.

I find that true as long as the vista is unspoiled by man-made changes. There is something both haunting and magical today about stopping along the road in a remote area where you can see from horizon to horizon with only the sound of the wind to listen to. Not many places in the USA like that left now. Nevada probably has the most unspoiled natural vistas.

I find some man made changes to be equally fascinating. My response to the Sant Rita mine was, "now that is one damn big hole."

Of course - but then we're comparing apples and oranges, right? I'm fascinated by New York City and it's man-made canyons. But that doesn't mean I don't like barren landscapes too!
