That being said, I don't know that I'd want to live there 12 months of the year; it has severe winters and few amenities. Ruidoso is also a favorite place...I just can't narrow it down to one place. Sorry.

I have never been to Red River, but I expect to get up there one season to see what the skiing is like.
One thing that turned me off was having to navigate an icy mountain pass in the winter....constant driving for the basics.
Having said that, I am not happy with the heat in Alamo right now, but it is HOT everywhere right now....this TOO shall pass...LOL!!

Hey Cathy! Why not take a trip up to Red River before the snow sets in, along with the possibly icy driving?
I just had a friend who came back from a week there .... and she said the temperature was heavenly ... 70s in the day and 40s overnight. I'm so jealous!!!!

Towanda, I am BEAT, LOL!!! I might consider a trip up MUCH later...right now, I have NO desire to get in the car and take any trips....after 6 trips back and forth from Midland to Alamo in the span of about 3-4 weeks, LOL!!
But...yes, I'm jealous of the temps there, too, but those wonderful temps come at a price when winter sets in. Having to drive in town when it is very cold is one thing....but having to negotiate an icy mountain pass all winter long is not something I think I'd want to do on a regular basis!!
Can you imagine having to drive everywhere over an icy mountain pass just for basic stuff...??
Not me. I'm spoiled!!!

Cathy ~ I didn't mean "RIGHT NOW"....take a couple of weeks to rest first.
Nope, I would not live in Red River ... it is too isolated for me. But I am looking forward to a lot of trips up there in the future.
The friend of mine who just got back from there went to the annual chile festival there last week ... she said it was A*W*E*S*O*M*E! She also went to a high mountain lake called Goose Lake and she said it was spectacular.
Hey 6 FOOT 3 ~ I can't see the picture .... just a little red X.

You do what you have to do. I used to drive mountain roads in winter constantly. Never had an accident doing that in nearly 40 years.
Red River is not that isolated. Not a bad drive down to Questa and then into Taos. A friend of mine worked for the cable company in Red River. He had to drive over to Cimarron nearly every day and to Taos just about as often, no matter what the weather. He loved Red River and would not have left had he not been offered a promotion and huge pay increase that required him to transfer to a bigger area.

virgokid:
I love Abiquiu too.
My problem is that I cannot name a favorite town or city without a lot of indecision....I love so many places in NM.
Earlier in this thread I picked Santa Fe, because I absolutely adore Santa Fe and have always felt at home there and it will be my home in the coming year and I hope to live out the rest of my life there ..... but oh my gosh, there are so many other wonderful places in NM to choose from, aren't there?
Some of my most beautiful NM photographs are from the country just north of Abiquiu. WOW!
