Curious about registering an out-of-state vehicle in NM - does my insurance policy from another state cover me, or do I have to get NM-based insurance? I just paid for a 6-month policy in the state I moved from and I don't want to have to shop around for insurance until I have to.

Can I register a car here with an out of state driver's license? My AZ license is valid for another thirty-something years - I'd rather just hang onto it and not fuss with getting a new one.

We just did this when we moved to NM recently. I had vehicle insurance from California, and the nice people at the NM MVD said it was fine to have out-of-state insurance, you just have to carry around a copy of the policy that shows how much $$ liability insurance you have.

Make sure you get uninsured motorist coverage. The odds are high that the motorist that hits you will not have any covarage at all.
Just another stat the state of NM ranks in the # 1 position nationaly in UNINSURED MOTORIST.
