Gun Laws in New Mexico
Here in Arizona, we can carry a gun without a permit as long as it is in the open and not concealed. A permit is required if it is concealed. What is the law in New Mexico?

I think it is the same deal. My cousin wore a gun on his hip as long as I've known him. As far as I know, he doesn't have a permit.

Gun permits
Here in Texas, and in most states that have gun permits, it's a concealed permit (I have one). I may be wrong, but I thought Arizona is the only state in which a carried gun has to be out in the open. I do know that TX and NM have reciprocal privileges, so a permit in one is good in the other (TX has this arrangement with quite a few other states, too). So it's legal to carry a gun openly on the hip in both AZ and NM, but they both also have concealed-carry permits?

I am a retired law enforcement officer and wanted to post the exact law for weapons in Arizona. Anyone (no felons) 21 or over can carry a gun in the open in Arizona. In other words, my neighbor could strap a holster on himself, with a loaded gun, and walk around town. If the gun is concealed by say, a jacket, then a concealed weapon permit is required. The permit is obtained after a gun safety course is passed and the person is fingerprinted and passes a check for felony arrests. The gun does have to be removed (concealed or not) if a business posts a sign that there are no guns allowed. Guns are not allowed in places serving liquor or beer. If a person is driving a vehicle with either a concealed weapon or a weapon in the open, it is suggested that the person, when stopped for any reason by a law enforcement officer, place his hands on the dashboard and tell the officer that he is carrying a weapon. A gun carried in a holster is not considered to be concealed as long as the holster is visable.
I have observed a few individuals with guns strapped to their sides, but that is actually rare, at least in Green Valley where I live.
I wondered about Silver City, NM (or Grant County) because city laws or County laws can be more strict than state laws.

As far as I know NM issues no concealed permits. DH carried when we lived there.
It is open carry on the hip, concealed is illegal.
And if you get pulled over by an officer - you darn well better let him know it is in the car. It is supposed to be in plain sight, you keep your hands on the wheel like azloafer already said.
And I do not believe that there is an agreement with TX. Last I knew anyway. You will have to verify with the ATF. They are the BEST source for firearms laws.

Concealed Carry in NM
NM has issued Concealed Carry permits since 2004, and has reciprocity agreements with several states including Arizona, Utah, Colorado & Texas.

Right. I just renewed my CHL in TX and was told that NM had been added to the reciprocity list.
Azloafer: The concealed-carry laws there are similar to those here.

Wow that is new!
DH actually hated the open carry laws there - can't wait to tell him things have changed for the better.
When we were there, we could not carry in TX.
Good to hear a state that is improving on the laws rather (like NY) restricting them.
Is it a lifetime permit for NM or do you have to renew?
Thanks for the update BTW!
