Hi WanderWoman, Santa Fe would be the place to move to. There are a lot of Muslims who live here and own/manage restaurants, hotels, etc. Besides Santa Fe is known to be very accepting and is made up of a diverse population.
to add to the discussion- what about interracial couples? I am indian and my partner is white
thanks
edit: i am not looking for a community of other indian people, just lookingfor a non hostile place:P
Judging from my experiences, NM may be among the least hostile places in the States. It is laid back for the most part, accepting or just indifferent, no never knows.
It all really depends. The media in general paints a very bad picture of Muslims, sso you may have to deal with proving it wrong for a while. Kind of like i did when people thought i was from Iraq and not Ireland when i first got here. If you move to a small town and youre different, you are going to be talked about. BUt if youre a nice person and make friends easily enough, all of that crap will stop. Good look on your adventure!
i remember i had just gone through a mountain pass in southern NM and i stopped at a gas station. We picked up lighter fluid, marshmallows and hot dogs for camping in a teepee :P The gas station was at the top of a mountain I wish i remembered exactly where. Anyway i met a guy i nan old chevy pickup, he had his wife kids and dog in the truck. He saw my nj plates and said whoa youre a long way from home. We talked, he was a very nifce guy I believe his name was rueben montoya? anyway i felt perfectly welcome in that small town, but people think im hispanic so who knows :P
We met some great people during our last trip to NM. That is one of the main reasons I want to move there. Relativly lack of snow and extravagantly priced real estate are the others.
I agree with Mark S. and rafays; I grew up near UNM in ABQ and met many people from the middle east and west asia over the years - great people - as ABQ is pretty diverse. Smaller towns like Roswell or Hobbs or anywhere in the SE 1/4 of NM I would avoid, re: the redneck factor.
could not agree more with br7or13 - avoid SE NM - there is blatant islamophobia here, not in everyone of course but in quite a few. Some are not so apparant with it and keep it hidden but others will be quite in your face with it i'm sure. I noticed there is even a local channel (from eastern texas - Gods parayer network or something like that) that regularly broadcasts anti-islamic and pro-christian and pro-israeli broadcasts and they are not afraid to be blatantly racist. This is for sure red-neck country but also a lot of hispanics, a lot of whom unfortunately cannot see beyond what is on the media.
I live in Las Cruces and can say it is probably the least judgmental place I've seen. I'm from New Jersey, and there was much more squabbling amongst different groups of people there.
Check out Socorro. New Mexico tech is there and it seems to draw in folks from the middle east for the petroleum studies programs they have.
do you think there's any working opportunities in socorro?
