winnie, you got me looking at a map. I just realized how close Colorado is.

I heart skiing.

I feel like I just fell into dumb luck by volunteering to go out to Cannon. And I really never thought I'd say anything like that.

CannonAdvon, if ABQ area gets some good snow in the Sandias, they have a ski resort. Also Angel Fire, Taos and Red River are some really good ski areas. Taos is more for pros but they have some regular runs too but they also have some that will make your heart go into your mouth as well! Durango Ski Resort and Telluride Ski Resort, in Colorado, are close to the NM border. Also Cloudcroft is ok too, sometimes way down south like Ruidoso or Cloudcroft, the ski resorts don't get much snow, other years a surplus. If they get some good snow, it is close to you.

Ditto to Crackerjack!

NM is skiing HEAVEN!

El Capitan is a 12,000 ft mountain near Ruidoso. The top 2,000 ft are mostly tundra snow capped terrain. Capitan boasts one of the largest vertical drops in N. America - 2,000 ft drop on its black diamond trail.

It is about 2.5 hours from Clovis. Stay on 70 going towards Roswell, then make a right in Roswell, staying on 70 and take it west out to the mountains. You will go past Ruidoso Downs (quarterhorse racing) and then into the town of Ruidoso. You will have to get a map for the rest of the trip to see how to get to the mountain.

Best place to stay is Inn of the Mountain Gods casino. First rate, and a relatively CHEAP 5 star hotel (we paid 100 dollars for a suite on Valentine's day with no advanced notice). Favorite hideaway to movie stars and famous people. Silvester Stallone is a frequent visitor from what the wait staff told me. It is a beautiful hotel, and many rooms have a direct view of Capitan.

A must see indeed.

LOL! When I was there people's idea of fun was to go to the train tracks and as the train passed they would lean into it or something to that effect..other favorite pasttimes were prarrie dog shootin on the country roads.
Lighting off fireworks in Dec south of the base on the backroads. OH! And the teens drove up and down Main St and stared out the windows at each other lookin for love..lookin for a fight. It was odd..

Are you new down at Cannon Muhnay? I've given some suggestions as to things to do in NM area that might help. We were at Cannon 1997-2001. Good ol 522fs. Know a few guys down there still we had a great group of airmen there. Good people make things memorable and help the time pass better.

CannonAdv if you are still out there hope you are doing well in your new post. Give a yell if you get the chance!

No, a friend of mine that lived with me after he got out of the army, recently moved back there. I helped him... and I was not very impressed. Way to small town for me.. Im not into super cities like Dallas either.. Something around the size of Boise is fine.. but I like to be close to all the action, being isolated in El Paso TX, has taught me to hate being isolated from easy travel and exploration of near by cities. One of the reasons I liked the East Coast, was you could with in a couple hours be in a cool new city able to explore it, and be home again all in a weekend.

Muhnay Harry O was right he was jiving Clovis is worse the El Paso at least in El Paso you can find things for you and your family to do, and in Clovis there is nothing wrong with watching the trains go by , because if it hadn't of been for the Rail Road Clovis would have never been created, One of these days these big shot idiots here in Clovis are going to realize the Rail Road was what built Clovis not the Military or anyone else. I saw advertisment on Clovis awhile back saying Clovis was a city on the move, in fact like I stated in the previous article that add is in fact 100% correct. Clovis is moving!!! Everything one is moving North of 14th Street, but as far as populations Clovis has barley grown enough in the last 30 years to replace the folks that have passed away. But on a plus note, bring a real sharp knife with ya and when you get here take a drive south of 14th street and stop and pick up some wood that is laying around from the abandon buildings and learn to whittle and once that is done you can whittle some little figurines and you make some money on the side and have something to do at the same time.

I hate El Paso..best part was seeing the town through the rear view mirror. Not a big fan of too many border towns.

Remember when King AFB was closed? (Roswell) the city almost went under and still has not recovered to it's military base days. While Cannon did not invent Clovis it surely would kill whatever is left of the town if the base left..all that would be left would be some confused prarrie dogs, a couple engineers and that bar down on Mabry drive.

The BRAC comission could not give a hoot what kind of town Clovis is, to be quite honest with you. They have set criteria and cannot deviate from them. None of that criteria included what kind of a city the base was near, only consideration was encroachment. They even had Oceana NAS on the list (VA beach area) imagine how the navy boys would cry if they lost Oceania!!

They let the town reps come and wine and dine them but they had their list long before that BRAC was started. Believe that. The Shi**y fifty could not sell ice water to people in hell and are not as smart as they would like to think. I used to roll my eyes back into my head when I had to serve those polyester suit wearing bobble heads while working at the Shogun. Pick anyother city in the US and they would be nobodies.
