We currently live abou 90 miles away from Omaha in Iowa..... What's keeping us from moving down to Alamo?? We have a few things to tie up here, and get our ducks in a row.... We are working hard to get down there before next winter.

Sorry for the delay in answering. Both DH and I have to have surgery (me on my foot, and him a shoulder replacement). I'd like to at least get my foot taken care of before moving down.

OK, now on to the mud in the face, I was told wrong, and she'll be going to Texas for basic! LOL - thanks for helping get the correct information, everyone!

Wanted to mention the restaurant called Alamo Grill. Chilegal, Cathy4017 and my s/o and I ate lunch there yesterday. I enjoyed the chimichangas. Good food.
The weather was gorgeous (and so is Timberon).
I'm in love with the mountains and trees but not in love with raking pine needles out of the yard. LOL
The sound of the wind blowing in the trees is the most incredible sound.

When I first drove through Alamo I wasn't all that impressed either. But....but I stayed a year and a half and if not for health issues I would love to settle and maybe retire there. There isn't much nightlife but other then that it has a little bit of everything you need. And many places are close, maybe an hour at the most. It's quite pretty after you get to know the place. The weather was my favorite. I wore shorts 365 days of the year. The air is so dry it really moderates the actual temperature. I really never thought the weather was an issue. Especially since its sunny most of the time. There really isn't anything real bad to say about Alamo. Its in the middle of a real pretty section of the state. Learn to do what the locals do and you will have a nice time. Here's your first tip. You NEVER drink the tap water. But every street corner has a water store. And it has several nice grocery stores. The people at the air base are very nice neighbors who do a lot for the community. I say go for it! I really miss the place.

Wow, you revived a really old thread, dormant for almost 20 months. But I like Alamogordo too, as much for what it's close to as for itself. After you retire, you may not care much about 'nightlife'. I don't recall trying the tap water...what was wrong with it?

Tap water is fine for me... Every area of the country has a different tasting water. This may be the problem. The water does have caleche in it that makes it harder.

Thanks, chilegal. I'm sure I can tolerate that. I even like the mineral water in Mineral Wells, TX!

And of course if the tap water does bother you just use a filter, the water where I live in California is decent, but I still feel safer using a filter. Not only can you taste a difference, but you can see a difference just by looking at the water. And it's so much more economical than buying bottled water.

Agreed. I use a Brita filtered water pitcher I keep in the fridge. The tap water here in Ft Worth isn't bad except in August, when the lake becomes stagnant. It's not bad for you even then, but it gets a funky taste.

I would like to know if U live in Alamogordo, nm, or if you are close to it? We are thinking of moving there in a few months. I would appreciate all your input re: alamogordo? Pro's con's, heat, people, water is it still a problem?
