Where to retire in New Mexico
Looking to retire in NM. Would like to fish w/ boat, and be less than an hour's commute to Albuquerque or Las Cruces. Looking for acreage (20+ acres) in a community with restrictions. Any ideas?

Use the search box and enter [retire new mexico land]
and you can find this:
http://www.city-data.com/forum/new-m...ood-place.html
and this:
http://www.city-data.com/forum/new-m...t-land-nm.html
You can play around with search with "NM" instead of "New Mexico"
and adding "acreage" and maybe "open" "space" stuff like that.
You'll do better by looking at the old threads and asking questions
based on information in there. You also don't have to wait so long
to get started on your quest.

Finding some small communities with that much land to offer would not be a problem. It's when you have the "one hour's" drive from either Albuquerque or Las Cruces, that narrows the search considerably.
Cochiti Lake is about 45 minutes North of Albuquerque, just west of I-25. It is a "no wake" lake, but your boat and motor are OK.
To the east of Albuquerque on I-40, Santa Rosa Lake is a nice lake, with good fishing usually. Just north of the town of the same name, but about 120 miles from Albuquerque.
To the south, Elephant Butte Reservoir is the state's largest lake (either it or Navajo up in NW NM), and just below it is Caballo Lake, both on the Rio Grande River...as is Cochiti. Truth or Consequences is just 20 minutes to the west on I-25, and it's a quiet little community, very popular with retirees. T or C, and the two lakes are approximately, 75 miles north of Las Cruces. So that would be about an hour and a half's drive pulling a boat.
I used to live in both Las Cruces, and El Paso, and loved to fish up at Elephant Butte. It is definitely a better fishing lake if you have a boat. If I were you, I'd check out the Las Cruces area, especially the north valley area for land, and the drive up I-25 to EBL wouldn't be bad from LC. They have a very large marina area at EBL (it's also a State Park), so many Albuquerqueans, Las Cruces residents, and El Pasoans just keep their boats bouyed there year round. They have both covered docks, and the buoys (sp?) in open water off-shore.
Hope this helps a little. I would have a couple other suggestions for a retiree with a boat, but they are not within the hour, hour and a half drive of either Alb. or LC.
Have a good one!

Hello all. I'm retiring in about 3 years and am intersted in moving to NM also. I'm primarily looking for a place near hunting areas. I love the outdoors and hunting. i'd like 20 or so acres not further than an hour or so from good shopping, etc. Thanks in advance!

Pena Blanca is also right next door to Cochiti, so 30 to 40 mins to ABQ, and 30 to Santa Fe. The largest parcel of land I see there is a little under 11 acres with no restrictions. Not sure how Cochiti Lake is for fishing . . .

Pix of Cochiti Lake
All this talk about boating and fishing made me realize that it's been ages since I've actually seen anything resembling a body of water. I drove out to Cochiti today and spent a lovely afternoon trasping around in the hills and meandering by the lake. Lots of wind surfers! (My advice to others: don't try this in flip flops!)

Consider Socorro, New Mexico. One hour south is Elephant Butte Lake and Caballo. One hour north is Albuquerque. It has a golf course. And, if you go about twenty miles into the mountains near Magdalena, there is land for sale. Beautiful land at affordable prices.
