Bright, what is your friend's name? I can check the phone book to see if there is a listing for him, if you like.
That is a fine deal, actually.

Migrations to Silver City from 2005 to 2009:
Arizona - 565
California - 218
Texas - 152
Nevada - 73
There were also 295 people in New Mexico who moved to Silver City.

In 2008 and 2009, more people left Silver City than moved into the city...

There are probably a lot of other factors to consider...

I agree, as I think the California effect on that area is a tad overstated. I think it's actually more of a factor in Las Cruces. Grant County is somewhat of an odd duck. You would think this area would be rife for inflow of migration given its natural beauty, but I see Silver City as somewhat of a squandered opportunity. The city I draw comparisons too, a way of doing it the right way, is nearby Bisbee Arizona. If someone with money from California is looking to relocate, and sizes up both of these places, I would venture to say 9 out of 10 are going to opt for Bisbee, because the town itself has been better transformed in a more refined fashion.

Wow that's a nice deal! Is it a mobile home or a real one? Also, is all or most of the land usable (flat vs steep)?

How did you find it?

Thanks!

Its a real house, built in the 1930s. Land is 95% usable. Found it through a real estate broker. We told him what we wanted and he searched for us. We found it over Labor Day weekend, put in an offer, and closed the deal in mid Nov. We back up to BLM land, so nothing behind us but cattle.

When we do retire and hopefully move to New Mexico after I retire we will be looking for an in-town house with public water, sewer as well as electricity and natural gas. We were considering Silver City. We have visited and consider it to be an excellent place to retire. Before we actually sell out here and move we will likely do a couple of winter rentals in different towns just to see if we actually like New Mexico. I am certain I will but my lady is reluctant to just up and move.

FWIW – that 160 grand will not buy a buildable empty lot where we currently live in Londonderry, New Hampshire. Our condominium town house (low end for L’derry) is worth almost that much.

My guess is that most of the folks that moved from Arizona are from California. Just like NM, AZ has seen an influx of Californians.

OK so the next logical step for me would be to ask you to DM the name of your real estate broker . Mine obviously sucks.

And that's what it is, a guess... We could speculate forever, but I'm not going to.

Alison's real estate broker must be good indeed. The only deal, looking on realtor.com, that even approaches Alison's, is this one:

56 Sundown Trl Silver City NM - Home For Sale and Real Estate Listing - MLS #28786 - Realtor.com®

And it's still listed higher than what Alison was able to buy.

I have not been back to Bisbee since 1984. We bought a house there in 1972 as a partnership investment and we sold it about 5 or 6 years later, with a decent profit. One of the partners mother was a Real Estate agent in Sierra Vista, who handled the paperwork etc...

Employment caused my frequent relocation to change for many years, finally ended up back in the great SouthWest in '98.

I've had my stint's in rural life a few times, that's why for now I'm sitting in Rio Rancho. We will be going up to the Silver City area to relax this year, but SC is not for everyone.
