Default Best Movie Made in NM

With all kinds of films being shot in New Mexico, it's getting kind of hard figuring out which might be the best ever made here.

Two that come to mind are "Easy Rider" and "3:10 to Yuma". I mention them because the scenery is just as important as the acting.

The Milagro Beanfield War (1988)

Absolutely delightful and beautiful film. Filmed mostly near Truchas, I think.

If there was ever a more beautiful woman than Julie Carmen (as Nancy Mondragon)...

My personal favorite movie shot in New Mexico is "Two Lane Black Top"........ (1971)....starring Dennis Wilson, James Taylor and Warren Oates ...it was partially filmed in Santa Fe and the "gas station" scene was shot in Tucumcari... along with other non NM locations ...such as Needles,CA and Flagstaff,AZ .....James Taylor wasn't the best actor in the world and after making this movie pretty much stuck to singing and songwriting ...Beach Boy Dennis Wilson was abit better ...but Warren Oates was amazing !! ...I love his acting in this movie ..so natural ....gotta love those cars too ...1970 455 HO GTO and '55 Chevy....same one Harrison Ford drove in American Graffitti !!

"Rocks with Wings", a documentary by Rick Derby about the girls' basketball team at Shiprock High, also rates high on my list.

It was made about 15 years ago and focuses the culture and grittiness of the players who won the state championship for the first time in their school's history.

Even though only part of it was in NM and it was supposed to be Montana, I would have to vote for Lonesome Dove.

Easy Rider is probably my favorite movie of all time. However, from a standpoint of scenery, the scene in that movie which stands out is the one where Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper are riding through Monument Valley Utah while "The Weight" from The Band is playing.

Default Kirk Douglas's Favorite Film

"Lonely Are the Brave," shot in B&W in the early 60's, in and around Albuquerque. Co-starring Walter Mathau, & Carrol O'Connor. This little known film was Kirk's personal favorite over all his many other blockbusters.

A one-time, "real" cowboy, whose lifestyle is losing out to "progess" in the "New" West, just can't adapt, and finds himself in trouble with the law. Great photography in the Sandia Mountains. I don't believe it has ever been released on DVD, so scope out the dwindling tapes at your local Movie rental, or possibly libraries.

One of those great, "message" films that made you think...before the time of never ending explosions, and car chases! Not even any sex or nudity! :-)

Excellent suggestion for a thread! Thanks.

I can't believe none of you named John Wayne's "The Cowboys" yet! (Though some was in Colorado.)

But here's a few more you might have forgotten:

These were either partially or entirely filmed in NM:

Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
Billy Jack
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
City Slickers
Red Dawn (I thought I recognized Las Vegas in there!)
Silverado

Don't worry--there's still plenty more...
