Is Edgewood the Place to Be?
Hi,
My wife and I are looking to move to NM from Baltimore Maryland. I grew up around El paso and Las Cruces and Lived In Arizona for 13 years. The West calls me back and I find that I am just not an east coast person. My Wife, Bless her is all for it! I cannot get the beauty of NM out of my mind. Ah but where In NM should we Live? We definitley need to be outside and close to ALB or Sante Fe. As we look at sites of property for sale on the internet we keep coming back the area of edgewood and that surrounding it. We would appreciate any input about edgewood or suggestion of sites on-line to visit for more information, etc.
Were interested in areas with at least an acre+ of land.
Thanks,
JLOTEO

Edgewood is not all that attractive to me. There are some nice places to the north of 1-40 up on sedillo hill. If you have your mind on edgewood you have to keep the water issues in mind. If you are buying with a well you must find an independent to inspect it.
Also the commute can be a challange at times
If you want to look at some really nice places not all that far from Albuquerque or Santa fe. Type in Placitas or Algodones "terra" into your search.

Edgewood is great
If you are looking for peace and quiet and wide open spaces than Edgewood is the place to go. Pros of Edgewood are that you are only 25 minutes thru the canyon to ABQ and the airport and if I-40 is busy you can always jump on old route 66. Santa Fe is less that an hours ride also. The temps are lower in the summer than ABQ because of the increase in altitude. Residents are very friendly and welcome outsiders, lots are no smaller than 1 acres and will remain that way - the town fights to stick to their mission statement of minumum 1 acre lots. As the says goes, "We do not want to look like Rio Rancho."
Not as windy as ABQ or RR but Edgewood does get more snow - big deal, it is gone by mid-afternoon. Real Estate is still affordable and good builders can be found locally. Forget Placitas unless you have a huge bank account.
Great place to retire and so what if it is too icy, etc in the canyon just do not go to ABQ that day!!! Once Walmart get built prices of RE will rise so if you are thinking you might consider Edgewood do it now.
Good luck finding a place. If you need help with builders or agents let me know

JLoteo, I lived by Edgewood and I like it myself. It is rural looking and is located in the foothills near ABQ. The winters aren't bad. It will snow a little more than ABQ but like Ravensnest said, it is gone in no time. I40 is getting busy and wrecks can sometimes close the freeway for a short time, but other than that, not bad. I like that it is close to ABQ but still rural. You do have to make sure you can get water like _yb stated, so get a qualified inspector. All in all though, Edgewood is a nice place to live.

Walmart
Article found at Mountain View Telegraph...
Wal-Mart could break ground on a supercenter in Edgewood as early as next month.

Just got back from a trip through ABQ, Edgewood, Moriarty then up to Durango. I have to say Edgewood is growing by leaps and bounds but the area is very pretty. I am noticing Tijeras is growing too. ABQ is as big as ever and I was stuck in a traffic jam on I25 for over an hour and a half. A car crash caused a huge backup from ABQ to Bernalillo. I would REALLY reconsider commuting by car to Santa Fe from ABQ. I would suggest living and working in the same city. Bernalillo is growing more too. Moriarty has grown a little. It is still pretty small. Lots of mobile homes and modulars now. Bloomfield as grown some. Cuba is about the same dirty town it has always been. Durango has grown a lot. Farmington has grown a lot too. Aztec has grown some. Edgewood is a nice place to live and I also think Durango, CO is too. If you like the big city, traffic and all that, ABQ would fit you.

Edgewood Wal-Mart
Thanks, ravensnest, for the info, although the first sentence was all I needed! Crackerjack, I'm glad to hear that Moriarty hasn't grown much. I wouldn't want to move into an area that was growing very fast.

Catman, I couldn't believe the growth in Rio Rancho and Bernalillo. Edgewood also has grown a whole lot. I40 out by Edgewood is under construction again with concrete barriers and it is a real nightmare right now driving in it but when it is finished, should be a nice freeway. I have to say for anyone driving from ABQ to Santa Fe, BE SURE and drive in the middle lane NOT the far left lane because it will end and it is a huge nightmare trying to get in the middle lane when traffic is backed up!!!
Moriarty still looks like Moriarty. Most people think it isn't as pretty as Edgewood with all the pines and hills but Moriarty has a western feel to it like an old western with mountains in the distance. I too, am not one for a lot of traffic. ABQ is getting so much traffic now. I think if I lived back in ABQ, I'd still pick Moriarty for the quietness. ABQ does have more to offer than ever before, but I like being close to ABQ, to have all the stores and entertainment, but live out where it is quiet.

CrackerJack: My thinking exactly. I need to live near a big city if I want to continue working, which I do, but I'd much rather live withing easy driving distance of it than live in it. Moriarty sounds fine to me. I love mountains and pines, but I would be within easy driving distance of them too, and I like the 'old western town' look. Bernalillo and Rio Rancho are already subsumed by Albuquerque, in effect, and growing way too fast. If I decide to hang it up in regard to working before I get out there, I will likely be looking at Silver City or somewhere in or near the southern mountains.
