Beautiful, one of my favorite drives in Colorado, although Ouray to Durango is impassible in the winter unless you have chains and four wheel drive.

Default And My Favorite Route to Farmington

From Albuquerque to Farmington my favorite route would be through Bernalillo and Cuba and its four lane all the way and it isnt the Dangerous Road with Drunks and curves that we are led to believe. el pintada kid

There's also 371 from Thoreau to Famington. Same distance and no gas stations or anything.

Drive Careful

Wow that was a serious bump on a thread that was dead for over a year...
I doubt it matters to the original poster now, but 491 is fine...I have driven it at all hours of the day or night. There are 24-hour gas stations along the way. It is about 2 hours from Gallup to Farmington and vice versa.

Don't drive at night. You could hit a deer, cow or wandering drunk. It is the most dangerous road in America because of drunk drivers. I take the back road from Farmington during the day that goes through Crown point 371 or 550 going thru Cuba but not at night. I 40 is rough from Gallup to Albuquerque. Avoid travel at the weekends around the first of the months at night unless you like dodging drunk drivers. Be careful at night it is a open range and I have had friends get hit walking even in town but especially on that 491 formally 666.
