BF is getting ready for a trip to Littleton CO from Phoenix AZ. Would like to stop in Farmington, but I can't quite figure out how far from I-40 it would be. Can anybody help with that?

Phoenix to Farmington altogether is about 450 miles. You would leave 40 at Gallup....and on to 491. From Gallup to Farmington, it is 122 miles.
Concerning 491......there is a big flap going on about widening that road to 4 lanes. From what I have been reading, it is a pretty dangerous highway....2-lane, narrow, winding, lots of drunk drivers, wrecks/death.....
I always took 550 from Texas/ABQ, so I have never driven the road myself, but I don't know that I'd want to be on 491 after dark at all...and probably not very comfortable with it during the day.
Maybe someone who has actually driven that road can tell me if this is overstated or true.

tonic asked:

Go to any mapping software like yahoo, google, local.live and
select driving directions. It will tell you that it is about 121 mi
when you go from Gallup to Farmington the most direct way.
The road is good and it should take you from 2-2.5 hours to drive it.
I'm assuming that you don't want to know how close they are as the crow flies.
Also, you posted this in two separate locations within minutes of each other.
I'm also going to answer in the separate thread that you created, but I'm
going to request that the separate thread be removed from the forum.

US 491 is safe to drive during the day. But during the night time, I would stay off of it. From Gallup to Farmington is about a 2 hour drive.

I've driven from Littleton,CO (Denver,CO) to Phoenix,AZ ...the rt I took was east on I-70 to Grand Jct...then south on hwy 50 to Montrose ...then south on 550 to Farmington ...along the way you pass thru Ouray...Silverton...Durango ...Aztec ... at Shiprock head south on HWY 491 (formerly infamous HWY 666) to Gallup ...then west on I-40 to Flagstaff ...turn south on I-17 to Phoenix....I prefer this rt to going south on I-25 to I-40 ...though I've done both several times

Since he will probably take 491 anyway, even after I told him what I had found out, he wanted to know if there is an availability of 24 hour gas stations between gallup and farmington, or if this will add a level of difficulty to the detour? I told them how helpful you had been, so i figured I would ask this question too

If you fill up in Gallup, you should not need to fill up again before you get to Farmington...122 miles?
I HOPE you don't burn it up THAT fast, LOL!!!
