Too bad Jane and Kent won't be there. They won't be back till Dec.
I can hardly wait to get there full time.

El Camino
Well, errands, lunch, etc. El Camino is a small place in a reddish adobe building at 10th and White Sands Blvd.
I order a #3, 2 tacos, an enchilada and beans/rice.
Basket of chips arrives, thin, crispy, hot, good. The salsa served with them is made only of green chile...flavorless, very bland and not so good.
The ceramic plate arrives, hot enough that she has to use a hotpad....and that's the way it should be. I wasn't asked for red or green, and the enchilada was rolled, filled with cheese and onions. The beans and rice were OK....the enchilada was decent....but the tacos....
Shell was hot and semi-crisp....but the meat tasted like venison road-kill.
Not for me.
I was talking to the local at the window at Caliche's.....and she said that La Hacienda was terrible when they went....and that Si Senor's in Las Cruces is REALLY good.
Well.......there aren't very many left....LOL!!!
This weekend it is homemade salsa and chips....since I can't seem to get any decent salsa locally...at least not yet.
Why is everything so bland?!?

Maximino's
I worked up an appetite after spending an hour and a half at the DVM getting my license and tags, so I stopped at Maximino's on the way home. It's at 2300 N White Sands Blvd.
They have a buffet as well as a menu, and I opted to sit down and browse it, rather than going through the line.
I ordered the usual acid test for Mexican food...enchiladas, but no tacos this round.
Chips arrive, stone cold and tough, with two bowls of salsa, one red and one green. The red was another thoroughly blended up concoction overdone on the Mexican oregano; the green was probably a combination of green chile and tomatillo. I can't really get used to having red sauce with so much oregano in it; it dominates. Both were bland, and I had to ask for some hotter salsa from the kitchen.
The plastic plate arrives, and the food is barely hot. The enchiladas were rolled, red sauce, cheese/onions. They had a good flavor, and the beans were decent, rice ok....
It wasn't bad, but I doubt I'll go back anytime soon.
This Texas gal does not understand why they don't bring their food to the table piping hot. It was cold before I finished the last enchilada.

Harry, that is what surprises me so much. 85-90 miles from the Mexican border, and you'd think they'd have it in spades here.
I just don't understand why they serve the food so lukewarm instead of hot.
I have a couple more Mexican places, and that's it.
Margo's is not bad.....and La Hacienda and Alfredo's are OK. I can live with any of those. I stopped by La Hacienda to pick up a package of their fresh corn tortillas. It's just as easy to make my own at home, I guess, and the tortillas are delicious.
*Sigh*

Alamogordo-Tularosa: Casa de Sueños restaurant
I was out yesterday doing some Christmas shopping.....asked the proprietor of McGinn's/Arena Blanca Winery where a good Mexican restaurant would be found in Alamogordo...
As soon as I told him I was from Texas, he said, "Never mind. You aren't going to find any really good Tex-Mex/Mexican restaurants here. The nearest to what you want is in Tularosa....."
As it was only 13 miles....and I wanted to see some property over there anyway, I finished shopping, drove over and had lunch. It is on the left side of the road as you go into Tulie from White Sands/54/70.
YUM!!!!!
The building and atmosphere are wonderful....the chips arrive, thin and hot, along with some real salsa. It was not as hot as I like, but it was GOOD.
The menu is not extensive, but has some good-sounding items...a mix of New Mexican (green chile stew, etc.) and Tex-Mex. I ordered my usual enchilada plate.....green chile enchiladas, rolled, cheese, onions. It came with the usual rice/beans....
First of all, it was served properly...on a thick, HOT ceramic plate, as it should be!!! My food arrived piping hot, and stayed decently warm throughout the meal.
The onions were raw and sprinkled over the top of the enchiladas....the next time, I will either not request them or ask that they be cooked. Otherwise, the meal was perfect.
Now I know where to go get my Mexican food without having to drive to EP.....
