Alamogordo Restaurants
Well....I had a boatload of errands to run today, so I decided to stop by Si Senor for an early lunch......! It's always packed, so I thought I'd check it out.
Ewwwww.
The lunch special was a chile relleno, an enchilada and a beef taco, served with rice and beans.
The chips and salsas arrived.....the chips were packaged...the standard red sauce was OK.....along with another bowl with thick Ranch dressing. So-so.
I got the standard question....red or green. Green.
Hot, medium or mild? Extra hot if you have it.
Plate arrives. I am used to my plates arriving piping hot, bubbling around the edges, and hot gooey cheese covering the enchiladas and rellenos. Onions are not standard, even though the enchilada was rolled Texas-style and in red sauce. I forgot to request onions.....
That was the blandest meal I have ever had at a "Mexican" restaurant. It had no flavor at all....mostly like cardboard. If that was what they considered hot green sauce, forget the mild. It had no fire at all....besides the fact that the food wasn't that warm (warm as in hot from the stove) when it arrived. It wasn't too far removed from room temperature.
Yuck.
Well, on to the next one.......
I had stopped at Amigo's Panaderia (bakery) after I got out of the pool last week.....I got a taco plate to go.....3 standard tacos (corn, but not crunchy) with lots of good white cheese, ground beef, and lettuce/tomatoes. Along with that, excellent hot sauce to top it off. The hot sauce was honestly hot, and the second best I've had since I got here.
Yum!!
I will be going back to Amigo's. It is more like northern Mexican cooking rather than Tex-Mex, but very good!!
Forget Si Senor......Noooo, Senor....

I can see that I am going to have to make a trip to EP for both Sam's Club...AND some good Tex-Mex food.....
I have several others on the list that I will do as I go along...!
Where is the best Mexican place to eat in EP? I am starving for some.....La Hacienda will probably be next on the list.
Oops. I forgot one....

Another place that I just flat forgot about was Alfredo's.....a true hole in the wall--and good! Small, dark, old....perfect!!!
Jane and I went one evening.......real chips arrive.....along with an unusual hot sauce. It was good, but different in that it had Mexican oregano...and had been pureed smooth rather than being chunky. It had a nice kick to it, though, so I was happy.
The enchiladas arrived stacked (which is what I expected)....green beef, and very tasty. The sauce (chunky) was supposed to be hot, but.....the beef was ground and had a good flavor. You can request that the stack be topped with a fried egg (also common in Texas with red rolled enchiladas)....the rice and beans were good, too.
One thing that I noticed......they don't seem to salt the food nearly so much, which is fine....you can always add, but not take away.
I will go back to Alfredo's.

It used to be the best place to get Americanized Mexican food was Ponchos Buffet. But it has been gone now for years.. miss that place. Another place that was great was Leo's on Hondo Pass now gone.. but I think there is a place there now called Linda's.
Since you will be in the N.E. side of town first if you take US 54 to get here, I have a few suggestions. On Trans mountain Rd there is a small place there in the shopping center on the corner of Trans Mt Rd and Rushing.. LA PALLAZ I think is its name.. it has good food. You may also like the buffet place on the corner of Dyer and McCombs, I have not eaten there in a year or so, but I remember it being good. Now if your going to the East side of town there is a place I love.. I will get you the address and info for the place.. and make sure its still there.. I ate there 6 months ago just as we left town.. and it as awesome.

Enchiladas
Cathy 4017: "Green beef"? Is that a NM specialty? I had some of that in my refrigerator way in the back, but I threw it out. I hope you were referring to something completely different.

Thats too bad about Si Senior Resturant as i knew the owners who also owned the Alamo Inn next door. They are very nice people but if the food is bad well thats too bad.
I always liked Margos especially when they used to be on White Sands Blvd and 8th. I wonder if they are doing fine on 1st street.
But i admit i do not eat like i used to (mexican food day and night) when i was younger as i eat very healthy (you know Blaa) as i love Subway or just make my own food as i'm into the health and longevity kick since i hit the big 40.....

Muhnay....i can't believe you didn't recommend to Cathy the DQ on Fairbanks NE El Paso. I mean how could anyone pass on the Triple Burger combo with a Kit Kat Blizzard.

Because I thought she wanted Mexican food.
And if she can wait for me to get my funding together.. she can eat at one of two places I want to open.
1st: EL GRINGOS, TEX-MEX.
2nd: Mc's - Bar & Grill with an Irish Flavor.
Or if the wife gets her way..
ALES SAN DRINI'S Itilian food. Named after her mother.. we would love to take over the Johnny Carinos Building on Trans MT. The wife being Itilian and all and my Irish.. it should be a fun place to eat. =)
