being friendly have a lot to do with my attitude?
Isn't there friendly and non-friendly people everywhere in the world? And, doesn't their being friendly have a lot to do with my attitude?[/quote]
Thats what I seem to find, in all my traels, to Mexico or Vietnam, al across the USA, " friendly and non-friendly people everywhere in the world " so be it.

Exactly as i agree with you oro !!
If you put out positive vibes then you usually get them back from people as the same with the negative no matter what State or Country on this planet.

I moved out here from Palo Alto, CA five years ago and returned there for a short visit recently.
While there, I noticed that people purposely avoided making eye contact. Although I was attempting to send out good vibes, nobody was on the receiving end, because they weren't pre-dispositioned to receive them.
Glad I'm back in NM, where vibes aren't a problem.

Nmguy, you seem to be the one of the few people that really understood the goal of this thread. I wish we lived in such lala land where it was just a matter of being friendly and people would reciprocate. I lived in Phoenix and I can't express how rude and unfriendly people were, you try to talk to your neighbor, they don't even want contact, people are shocked when you say good morning.
Anyways, living in Houston, people were much more friendly, we live in a subdivision and knew ALL our neighbors by name and their children. Everytime I go to Chicago, I just sense this very rude vibe too, I remember being at the CTA station and asking the information rep a question, she got mad and started yelling at me "You don't know how to get to such station?" as if I was an idiot(first time in Chicago). Chicago is the city with attitude, it seems like almost everybody has an attitude, even the way people drive in Chicago is "driving with attitude". Nice city but the attitudes stink.
I had a job once where I dealt with a lot of people from Massachussets and yes, I wish it was just a matter of being friendly and people would be friendly to you, I can't even express how rude and snappy these people from Mass were and I am not talking about 1, 5 or 10 bad experiences, more like hundreds!
Anyways, here in Minneapolis, people are extremely helpful and friendly. Funny part is that we are only 6 hours away from Chicago(totally different culture)

When I was attending recruit academy's for both the Department of Corrections, State of Hawai'i and the Maui County Police Dept. among the first things ingrained was: APPROACH DETERMINES RESPONSE. I've found that this bit of wisdom applies in evey aspect of life

Approach determines Response
I think that is a major factor in this situation. Having been in New Mexico for a year now and having had many phone conversations before, I found 99.9% friendly and helpful.
Most persons have an "off" day; one day the checkers at the store are great and the next, like , well you know.
Having worked in Law Enforecment and as a Medic/FF the approach is everything..
There will always be the person(s) who do not like you..period for whatever reason, and the types that you would not want to associate with anyway
can be irritating and maybe threating(the panhandlers, etc given a polite no) will not be a problem.
Conclusion.. helps too...remember some folks down here are having a really tough time..
I would not like to go back to Seattle area where I remember most are NOT friendly...
HW for my 2cents.
