Not to mention its going to be awefully hard letting go of my dogs so good homes they have to go too and I'm picky. But the Alaska cold is reaking havoc on my body so my doctors have said I need to move to improve on top of finances and being so expensive here. So its a no brainer really even though I fight it sometimes.

When I told my real estate agent I wanted to sell he had 2 people wanting to look at my place(other mushers) before it was even listed. But he jumped the gun(so did I) to soon and asked me if I could be out in 60 days. Of course I said no way. I have a kennel to sell first.
Thats why I asked about being dog friendly. I'll have a couple of retired dogs that have logged over 10,000 miles with me on the trail.
I do plan on renting first to make sure I find the right place for me and save money again after such a long very expensive move.

I had to change my user name/password. It didn't want to except my other one.

Scott,
You may want to consider Timberon or somewhere else where you do have some snow, but not super cold. I am thinking of the dogs here. They may not like the summers here.
At least you have interest in your place up there. That is a plus. And I am sure that it will be hard to let go of your sled team.
Good luck on your races that you will be doing this winter.
Jane

Scott, You will love it in Southern NM. I worked on the Cook Inlet Pipeline, between Granite Point and Drift River. It is great in the summer, But they can keep the winters. I can remember when the weather would get up to 35 deg.s and shedding the Carhadts because it seemed so warm. 25 and 30 below No Thanks! I can't take that anymore myself. The Mountains here are not like there, but they are beautiful !!! And you can enjoy them year round. Good Luck with the pups!

Scott-I live in western Colorado; I know about bone rattling cold. I have friends allthrough N.M. I love it. I don't know a lot about Alamogordo but have eaten at several restaurants and always enjoyed my stay there.

Default Is winter over yet

Actually Alamo sounds mighty fine with no snow. I've shoveled and pushed enough snow to last the rest of my life. The dogs will do fine there in the summers. They can come in the house in the hottest parts of the days if I can get them too. They don't like the house. A double coat on a dog also helps keep them cool like it dose in the winter to keep them warmer. There just amazing animals. It gets into the 80's here with high humidity. Its the winters when we get low humidity.
I don't mind 90's with low humidity. I was in Yuma,AZ when it was 116 and it got up to 124 after I left thank goodness. The probelm there is it stays hot into the night. Cool nights and warm days. Can there be a better combination. Not in my book.

Default Snow Dogs in Southern NM

Hi Scott,
I think your dogs will be fine in Alamogordo and pretty much anywhere in southern NM. I am moving to Las Cruces soon with my Sibes. As you noted, the dry air is much better for them and us then humid air - I know mine are miserable in July/Aug here in North Jersey. I met someone who moved to Las Cruces from the mid-west with a Malamute who is just fine. Extra added bonus - she doesn't grow such a heavy coat in winter so less coat to blow in the spring

Well, I am looking forward to (and really hoping for) SOME snow here in Alamo this winter, LOL!!

One big difference in the climate from where I moved (WT, only 290 miles) is that the nights cool off substantially here, whereas they sometimes stayed hot in West Texas. I really enjoy the cool, dry evenings and crisp mornings! The weather here right now is just terrific.....70s during the day and high 30s-mid-40s at night!

I know I've been checking the weather almost daily. Sounds like perfect riding weather. I was stationed in TX Ft.Hood. It was miserable. I joined the Army here in Alaska and left in July to SC then onto GA. Thought I would die for sure during basic training. On to Europe from there then back to AK before heading to TX.
After the Army though I lived all over from MO,WI to AZ,NV,OR. Came back to AK in 98 from Oregon(Lived there 6 yrs. 5 yrs. in Las Vegas before that)where I started running dogs on the sand dunes and in the snow up in the mountains. Been to Minn. to run dogs and points inbetween going back to OR. From the 5th threw 8th grade I live in the foothills of the Nevada Sierra Montain range in cattle country(before moving to AK the first time). Some big ranches that have sold now to make room for subdivisions. Alamo sound like home to me with pines and all the festivals and biker rallies. Plus over the years I've learned going back to somewhere I've lived before because I liked an area is never the same. I'd rather move somewhere I've never been before so I don't know how much its changed. Hopefully this will be the last time I ever move again where ever that may be in the end. I've choose NM though because its one of the most if not the most Veteran friendly states there is. Its truely a state that values the people who have served. But then again its a huge military state so it makes sence.

You have definitely done some traveling, man, LOL!!

But you're right. Veterans and the military are very much valued here. I love having the military presence here, and that's one of the reasons I chose Alamo, among several others.

I am not sure that it is my last move, though. I still have to return to TX from time to time because of my aging parents, but strangely enough, I like having my native state very close.

I felt several pangs as I took my TX plates off of my car.....

I here ya Cathy. When I left Oregon I sold everything I could, shipped the rest and flew to AK. I had no vehicle and about $700 in my pocket plus it been 17 yrs.since I'd been here. 9 yrs later I have a house full of furniture and all my toys. I think it would cost more to replace everything then sell it and try and buy new stuff. The thought of whats its going to cost to move is stagering even for the small amount I have. $10,000+ the convetional way by moving company.
Maybe someone here can help me. There's this container moving company I've seen advertised during golf on TV that I can't remember there name. We don't have them here in AK but they do in Seattle and if I remember right they were in Albuquerque also. They might even be in El Paso or Las Cruces I don't know. They do storage and everything in these containers. Dose that sound familar to anyone. Its really a slick company. They deliver the container you load it and they ship it to your next place. They bring it out you unload it and they pick up the container.

6'3 cool to see the country. Good thing they weren't riding Harley's they would have had to off the sound. Thanks for the forward on that.

Have any of you heard of Gary Paulsen. He's a pretty famous writer. He's done alot of kids books. Wrote about running the Iditarod,Touring on a motorcycles and others. The disney film Iron Will about sled dogs was loosely done after one of his books. However,I was talking to him yesterday(he has a kennel by me now a days also)and he was telling me that he has 10 acres in Tularosa where his wife stays. He also has a couple hundred acre ranch about 80 miles(I forget which direction)from there. When I told him sometime back about looking at Moriarty he said he was going to talk me out of that area and mention Tularosa. He said its nicer there(prettier) and only about 13 miles from Alamo.
