I think it would cost more to replace everything then sell it and try and buy new stuff. The thought of whats its going to cost to move is stagering even for the small amount I have. $10,000+ the convetional way by moving company.
Maybe someone here can help me. There's this container moving company I've seen advertised during golf on TV that I can't remember there name. We don't have them here in AK but they do in Seattle and if I remember right they were in Albuquerque also. They might even be in El Paso or Las Cruces I don't know. They do storage and everything in these containers. Dose that sound familar to anyone. Its really a slick company. They deliver the container you load it and they ship it to your next place. They bring it out you unload it and they pick up the container.

6'3 cool to see the country. Good thing they weren't riding Harley's they would have had to off the sound. Thanks for the forward on that.

Have any of you heard of Gary Paulsen. He's a pretty famous writer. He's done alot of kids books. Wrote about running the Iditarod,Touring on a motorcycles and others. The disney film Iron Will about sled dogs was loosely done after one of his books. However,I was talking to him yesterday(he has a kennel by me now a days also)and he was telling me that he has 10 acres in Tularosa where his wife stays. He also has a couple hundred acre ranch about 80 miles(I forget which direction)from there. When I told him sometime back about looking at Moriarty he said he was going to talk me out of that area and mention Tularosa. He said its nicer there(prettier) and only about 13 miles from Alamo.
Yes, even my move the standard way from a relatively short distance was expensive, and I did 90% of the packing and boxing myself, and brought up fragile items in my car, too. So I can imagine what it will cost from AK. I have also heard of the container concept of moving, but I don't know anyone who has actually used it. It sounds great if you've got a strong back and lots of help to unload!!

Tularosa and all of the surrounding small towns have their own charms...you might really like one of them better as opposed to Alamo. I chose Alamo mainly for the convenience. I don't like driving all over the place to get what I need....and I won't even like driving to LC or EP for Sam's Club and other things, but since those will be infrequent trips, I am willing to do that maybe once a month or less. I swim 3-4 days a week year-round, and also didn't want to have to drive 15 or more miles to the pool. I live about 1.5 miles from where I go now! It's VERY convenient. Walmart and everything else is here, so....

For others, they don't mind living in a more isolated place and adjusting accordingly. So, I would definitely make a trip out...look at ALL of it...and go from there.

Good luck...if I can answer any more questions from my limited time here, ask away!

I'm also looking at methods to move to Alamogordo, and seriously looking at this method.

Move with the Truck Rental Alternative - ABF U-Pack Moving

The quote that I got form them was the most reasonable, and the storage at either end is also much less than other companies.

The "POD" company does not operate in Yuma, AZ so I could not explore that method.

George

I'll probably end up in Alamo. I'm like you I'd like to go to the gym and have the convenience of having a pizza delivered or jump on the bike and be in town right now. I've been secluded long enough here in AK. But I'll never say never either.

George that company sounds better then one I was looking at. I just have to compare prices. But from Bellingham Washington to Alamo its only $1737. PODS closest ones are Albuq. and I think El Paso.

Hows the weather. It terrible here. Its all ice. I fell and bit the dust big time last night. Little bit of a stiff neck this morning.

I suggest you contact a shipping company in Anchorage an see how they handle standard freight containers. A forty-foot container should hold everything but your house. Sort of a do it yourself PODS. I just have no idea how they could drop one off at your place and get it back on the truck. Unless they just left the container and trailer in your driveway and did the same on the NM end.

Yea Greg the problem is they want to sell you the containers. 40' is way to much.I could probably park my truck and car inside one with everything. I think a 20'er is to much if its packed properly. I probably don't have as much as I think i do. But I'll bring anything with me I can't get a decent price for. I won't let people nickle and dime me just because I'm moving.
