Default Free College Education?

Can anyone confirm that if you graduate from a New Mexico High school with a grade of C or better, or obtain your GED, you can get your college tuition covered from the state? As long as you attend any college in New Mexico?
This is what a realtor told us while we were visiting New Mexico last month.

The New Mexico Lottery Authority will pay if you can meet the requirements. The lottery is seperate from the state.

If you are an illegal you can recieve a free college education in NM.

Lottery Success Scholarships

Since 1996, the New Mexico Lottery has raised nearly $325 million for education in New Mexico. In that time, more than 43,000 students from across the state have attended New Mexico public colleges, universities and technical colleges with the help of a Legislative Lottery Scholarship.

Part of every dollar spent on Lottery tickets benefits
New Mexico’s future. It opens the door to new generations of New Mexicans to obtain a college education that otherwise might not have been possible. And that makes New Mexico a smarter, better place.

The Legislative Lottery Scholarship helps provide tuition for New Mexico high school graduates (or GED recipients) who want to attend a New Mexico public college or university. Here are the requirements:
- Must be a New Mexico resident;
- Must have graduated from a New Mexico public high school, an accredited private high school recognized by the Public Education Department, or have obtained a New Mexico GED;
- Must be enrolled full-time at an eligible New Mexico public college or university, in the first regular semester immediately following high school graduation; and
- Must obtain and maintain at least a 2.5 GPA.

- Tuition funding;
- Eight consecutive semesters of eligibility beginning with the second semester of college enrollment;
- No application required, although some colleges may require the completion of FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Simply contact your college financial aid office, high school guidance counselor or the New Mexico Higher Education Department at 1-800-279-9777.

Free tuition for illegal immigrants is quite a stretch of the truth. The facts are that state laws bar denying education benefits based on immigration status. There are institutional scholarships avaialbe for these people that would further reduce education costs. Students must qualify for these scholarships.
These laws were passed by the legislature of the state of New Mexico which is duly elected by the citizens of the state. If there was not support for this act it would not have passed, or the legislators would not be re-elected. Incumbents continue to be re-elected.
Illegal immigrants also pay taxes and contribute to the local economy.

A educated immigrant population is a good thing. Education is something that we should all support because it helps our society. With education, people are less apt to to resort to crime because they can get good jobs - thus making our cities and towns safer. By the way, I think Louisiana has this perk for Louisiana residence if they go to state universities.

Amen, Jason!

My son in law is a legal immigrant from South America.

It took months of paperwork, $$$, jumping through hoops, and waiting in line for him to enter this country.

I have nothing against legal immigrants. It's the ILLEGAL part that I object to.

Some people don't have the time or money required to jump through the hoops. Can you really blame them for wanting to come here for a better life? Aren't national boundaries an arbitrary thing? Migration of labor is a supply and demand kind of thing and borders in a capitalist society are artificial and sure to fail.
It's no different than people moving from the rust belt to the sun belt for higher paying jobs and a better life. We are better off finding ways to deal with the immigration rather than futily trying to stop it. Encouraging improved conditions in Mexico would be the best way to reduce the migration.

#1 I live in Yuma, AZ and the last time I went 3 miles south of my property I didn't find anything "arbitrary" about the border.

#2 I'm tired of picking up the trash from the ILLEGALs that cross my property going north.

#3 Yes, let's throw more money across the Mexican border for the improvement of their living conditions. I think the Mayor of San Luis wants to build an even bigger and better house!

#4 Domino, why don't you illegally enter Mexico and see what happens and how you are treated. It amazes me that when it comes to Human Rights, it's a one way street.

George
