Yes, about an hour, going 75 mph to the Butte. And I am just like you: if it gets below 75, the t-shirts go away. The sweaters go on once below 70. It's amazing we tolerated NJ as long as we did.

That's what I find so funny. People from a cold climate that feel uncomfortable when it gets below a balmy 70. I haven't had a coat on since right after Christmas, when there was residual snow on the ground...most of which I missed.

I grew up in a climate hotter than Alamogordo's. Midland reached 113 last summer, whereas Alamo only got above 100--topping out at 103 at one point--three times. Austin had over 40 consecutive days of 100 degree temps.

Ugh!!!! So I quit complaining, mostly. But the older I get the less I tolerate the heat. I am in the wrong place, weatherwise, and should be in either northern NM, CO, UT or WY.

I wear a teeshirt every day. Rare I wear a coat. Feels so nice not to be wearing long johns, boots, mittens, ect. Of course this is my first winter here. Talked to my sister in law in NY state last night and she had a temp of 0*, and they've had over 130 inches of snow so far this winter. I will stay where I am.

Farmington does not get a lot of ice, from what I have seen, over the last 3-4 years of looking at its weather. It's 80 miles from Farmington to Durango Mountain Resort....and 125 miles to Wolf Creek. Both areas are in excellent shape right now, especially Wolf Creek with over 100-inch midmountain base right now, Durango at a respectable 64 inches. Both with packed powder and machine-groomed, just really good.

Sandia Ski area is open, but I understand that the conditions are not that great...and they don't always open every season. Santa Fe has been off and on.

Albuquerque is not particularly cold, and does not have a lot of snow. Farmington has generally been consistently colder than ABQ all winter long...and 15-20 degrees cooler than Alamo this so-called winter. It doesn't get a lot of snow, but it has snowed there 3-4 times this winter (correct me if I'm wrong). ABQ is also a lot bigger than I wanted, so I didn't really consider it, though I do like the city.

The so-called center is not convenient to either swimming OR skiing, not like Farmington and Aztec are. For that matter, it's not convenient to much of anything....you have to drive and drive.

I might even consider Durango, as expensive as it is. It has great skiing and swimming both!!

As far as getting out in it every day....being retired...I don't have to go if the weather is bad! You can stock up ahead of it, and just stay in if the roads are icy.

On the other hand, I'm heading for Texas in April, meeting my family in the Davis Mountains/Big Bend area. It's about 300 miles....and I couldn't do that if I lived way north.

So, there are compensating factors. Farmington does get hot in the summer, but not as hot as Alamo does.

Cathy,
You need more than one house. One for summer and one for winter.
