I'm reading Bless Me, Ultima right now.
It is very very good. Hard to put down.
Lots of interesting cultural stuff for those of us who love New Mexico.

Cool! I started reading it again also. I am reading the chapter when Antonio's older brothers return home from the war. Very interesting book indeed

Thanks for the tip on this book. I'll be looking for it in Ft.Lauderdale. If anyone cares for a more historical account of NM I can suggest Tularosa... Last of the Frontier West by C.L.Sonnichsen. University of NM Press 1-800-249-7737. A terriffic read that brought to life some of my favorite NM areas, and a lesson on the folks that settled it.

Hey, thanks for the suggestion...I need to get a library card....and also will be looking for books on the history of the entire Tularosa Basin/Otero/Lincoln county areas.
It fascinates me.

I had the chance to talk with Rudolfo Anaya once about 'Bless Me ültima' and asked him why its tone was different than most of his other works.
He responded that he was literally grabbed by a spirit and, with the help of this spirit, was driven to write the novel.
It is the kind of book that, once read, will never leave the reader's mind.

Bless Me Ultima, North From Mexico
I read most of Rudolfo Anayas books years ago hes written Several.I grew up in all those Areas of N.M. where Rudolfo grew up. Another book everyone needs to read to understand the Latino Culture better then they know themselves is... North From Mexico by Carey McWilliams. Its one of the most Historical Books to Read on the Southewest and used in Some Colleges to Teach the True History of the Southwest in the 18oos to the 1900s. el pintada kid

I read the book back in 9th grade, and I've been meaning to give it another read ever sense. I can still vividly remember some of the passages and some of the characters: how Antonio went to school (was it across a bridge of some sort?), how Ultima was so mysterious and yet so comforting, the bad guy (was his name Tenorio?), etc.
Definitely one of my favorites.
