Default descansos.org

When you see these along the highway, it wakes you up to the reality and fragility of life. Look both ways twice before you pull into traffic , maintain safe distance, stay in the right lane cause the drunks are most likely coming at you in the passing lane.

If there is anything to take away from seeing descansos along the highway, this is it. It pains me to have to acknowledge the sad truth about the reputation New Mexico has for drunk drivers, but descansos always remind me to keep a very weary eye out when I'm driving at night, regardless of where I am.

By the way, I have seen descansos in many states, including Kansas, Utah, Colorado, Hawaii, and many of the aforementioned states. They are not limited to New Mexico.

Well said, AndyJ. Descansos, despite their beauty and heart-felt feelings, also remind me of the drinking problem that this state has.

Maybe they will serve a two-fold purpose: honor the decesased and avoid liquor.
