Retirement to NM
Looking to retire to low summer humidity, no tornados, warm winter temps and cheap, on a limited retirement income.
How about NM I told my lady, now its crunch time, I gotta prove my recomendation. What say you land of enchantment folks, I have to admit to (back in the 50's on a two year visit) helping to finish grading the dug peanuts on a saturday afternoon before the girls could go on a date with us, then dragging main in Portales. I also remember fairly cold windy winters, how about farther south, are the winters warmer there ? OleGrouch

Ol Grouch - There are many threads on this forum that will answer your questions. Basically you choose you climate with elevation. Higher equals cooler. The north is slightly wetter, the south dryer but there is hardly any water anywhere.
Where I currrently live we can get more precip in one n'oreaster than NM gets in a year.

Check out Las Cruces, NM
Rated in top 5 best places to retire in the whole USA
Las Cruces, New Mexico Convention & Visitors Bureau
Nearby Deming is more affordable but very quiet

Since the OleGrouch is spanning the state, I feel that I should note that
NM is about 350 miles from N to S. 1,000 feet in elevation is good for
about 4 deg F cooling, but so is traveling 300 miles N.
That is why around Albuquerque/Santa Fe treeline is about 11,500 ft,
but in central CO it is about 10,500 ft and so on.
Of course, that 4 deg stuff is just rule of thumb. Albuquerque is, on
average, 3 deg cooler than Las Cruces during the summer months and
6.5 deg cooler during the winter months.
Albuquerque is about 185 mi N of Las Cruces, so that should account
for a 2.5 deg difference. It is also about 5300 ft at the ABQ airport
and 4440 ft at the LRU airport. I guess the 4 deg rule is close enough.

I vote Las Cruces as well. I am a Colorado resident but I would move to New Mexico if I had my druthers. Deming, Carlsbad, and Roswell are all OK by me, but there are other threads involving those areas that can help you. Snow isn't a problem in those areas, but wind is, especially Deming to the Arizona line. Good luck!!
