Is it pinon season now?
Is it harvest time? What are the usual dates for pinon nuts?
Thanks!

Depends on what part of the state you're in but generally speaking, the answer is yes. May be a bit late for "shaking the trees" in the northern-most areas but probably still good to go in the central/southern.

Hi! You seem very knowledgible about the pinon crops. At this time of year I know I won't find any but I'm making my fall plan. Could you tell me the closest place to Albuq where I would find pinon trees?
Thank you for any help

Pesto is generally made with pignoli aka pine nuts, parmesan cheese, basil and or parsley, and good olive oil. I make a stuffed eggplant with lean ground beef or lamb, onion, garlic, tomato sauce, pine nuts, oregano, and a little cinnamon.

I've never had roasted or salted piñons. When I was a kid we'd eat the shell and all. Too much trouble getting the meat out of the shell.
Regular pine nuts can sometimes be found in grocery stores. Piñon's have a great flavor whereas the regular pine nuts are blander, IMO.
The few times I've bothered trying to gather piñons I've spread a tarp out under a tree that has opened cones then use a long pole made from PVC pipe to whack the cones and knock the nuts loose. But the easiest way to gather lots of nuts is to look for ground squirrel burrows and simply rob the squirrels!
