Tijeras to ABQ drive
Can anyone give me a feel for the drive from Tijeras to ABQ?
Place I'm considering renting (short term) is about 8 miles up on Hwy 14 (only info I have right now) and my office will be at Manitoba & Tramway, on the NE side of ABQ.
The distance is shorter than what I've been driving the past 5+ years, so I'm not concerned about that part - and it's only temporary anyway. What I'm mainly wondering about is how bad the drive will be on bad weather days (January to April). Thanks!

On "bad weather days" it will suck and you won't want to make that drive.
If you are in town, you might want to spend the night in a hotel rather than go all the way home.
However, that being said, there might be enough "bad weather days" to count on one hand in a year. There might. Probably not. At least one though.
If you get off I-40 on Tramway and go up from there, that doesn't sound like a bad commute, but if I was working there, I'd live close and walk. Just the act of *not* starting your car will save you big bucks in the long haul.

Last year it could have been difficult for a few days at a time, we had an unusual winter and both I-40 and Old 66 were closed for a spell more than once. However, that is not the norm, and such a short distance so close to town means the road is likely well traveled in that area which means fairly clear.

The drive thru the pass is scary enough without snow. I certainly wouldn't want to do it with snow on the road.

I used to live in an apartment off Tramway. It's a gorgeous area. I'd definitely move there rather than the other side of the mountains. There are tons of rental places on or near Tramway.

I live about ten miles south of the freeway on Highway 337 (south 14 for us old timers). Ive been here for twelve years and can count on one hand the number of times I couldn't make it into town for work. The highway is plowed usually very quickly and proficiently and MOST of the people here know how to drive in snow. The drive on the nice days (which are about 99 percent of them) is very relaxing. Once you get off the freeway, pop a classical CD in, set the cruise for the speed limit, and you can pour yourself out of the car when you get home.
