Our Socorro Electric bills are excessively high. They are double what we paid last year this time and we haven't added appliances or aren't using more electricity. When I call they claim high useage. We pay much more than neighbors who have double the appliances. Anyone else here having this problem with Socorro Electric? How do you fight these outrageous bills?

1. Use less electricity.

2. Learn to read your electric meter. Make sure they are not making a mistake on reading the meter. Try to read the meter as soon after they read it. Look at your bill and see the read date. Sometimes they estimate a reading. It should be on the bill.

if you have not actually added a major load to your electrical system and your bill has doubled them something is wrong. You can start checking by:

Disconnect your home from the power lines by opening the main switch at your distribution box. Then check if the meter is still running. If so call the power company immediately! You can also take the effort to turn off each circuit in your home at the distribution box and, with the main stitch in the ON position, check if the meter is running. Check each circuit one at a time. If it does the last circuit has a parasitic load and should be checked by a licensed electrician.

You can also request the utility check the accuracy of the meter.

Thank you! Had heard about the disconnection process but have not done it-- will do it. Also had never heard about the possibility of a parasitic load on the circuit which would not surprise me at all being as Laurel and Hardy electric did the wiring on our house! Meanwhile Socorro electric will be coming out to do an energy audit a process of which I'm a bit skeptical but it's worth try.

I doubt my energy consumption has much to do with the high rates. There is a petition being circulated to recall the positions of two of the members on the Board of Trustees, one of which is for the Board President. This co-op is not being managed in the best interest of co-op members which has resulted in rate hikes for members. The history can be found at informedcynic.com
