I travel those roads all the time. The road from Roswell into Tatum is an easy travel 2 lane road, in Tatum it becomes 4 lanes, then back to 2 lanes from Tatum to Bronco and into Plains. Buy your gas on the main drag in Roswell...cheaper than far east Roswell and Tatum.

If you go from Hobbs west on the Carlsbad highway to the Artesia cutoff, it is 4 lanes. The cutoff is 2 lanes with heavy oilfield traffic. The cutoff joins the 4 lane when you arrive in Artesia all the way north up to Roswell...and points beyond. You save a lot of miles if you go this way instead of to Carlsbad and then north.
