Possibly moving to New Mexico
Hi there! My husband is thinking of taking a job in Gallup, New Mexico. I am concerned because we have two small children and I know nothing about the wildlife or the weather or basically anything. I keep hearing that it is a terrible place to live; well needless to say it concerns me to hear these things. If someone could tell me how it is to live there I would appreciate it very much.

Oh and also I would like to know if there is a hospital near Gallup and if anyone knows about good family doctors being around there.

Toward the top of your screen, click on Search. When the popup window comes up, click on Advanced. When the full search page comes up, put Gallup in the keyword field. Limit the search to topic titles and New Mexico. You'll see results of about a dozen threads on Gallup to get you started.
NM, like anywhere, is not for everyone. Some of us love it here, while others get out fast.

MC,
We are moving to the Alamo/Cloudcroft area this spring also. On the subject of somewhere being a terrible place to live. A lady I work with used to live in Alamogordo and when she found out I had volunteered to be transferred there she was shocked. To her it was terrible because the things that improved quality of life, actually lower my quality of life, i.e. more shopping, more people, more traffic, etc.
It is different but different does not mean terrible.

Yes, good point. I live near CC and love it. Alamo is 30 mins away and I would never live there. There are such wide variations within small regions that it's quite possible to be very happy in one area and not in a nearby area. You really have to visit a place and feel it for yourself.

I wish I could see it for myself first but no such luck. If he takes the job we will have to be out there for about a year.
But thank you all for helping out. Oh one thing I was confused about was how to use the search thing...sorry new here.

Heck, M.C. a year is not a lifetime. Look at it as a marvelous opportunity and a chance to experience a very different environment and learn a lot of new and interesting stuff.
And .... if you hate it, after a year you leave.
(I spent a year in New Mexico in 1970. I loved it so much that I have been spending nearly 40 years dreaming about returning... )

It's in the heart of Indian country as the Navajo nation and Zuni pueblo is right next to it. There is a hospital which is the Rehobeth Mckinley Hospital.
It's very rugged desert (think John Wayne westerns) with lots of Red Cliffs and Mesas in the area. You are close to Bluewater lake which has water sking/jet sking and also the Mogollon mountains in Arizona are near by with Pine trees and camping, fishing, hiking etc...
Hospital site is ........rmch.org
Gallup info is ..........gallupnm.org
A couple of photos

Hi M.C. and welcome to the forum! Here is a link to the home page of the Rehoboth McKinley Christian Health Care Services. I scanned through the site and the facility appears to be a very modern health care facility. I suggest that you check specific departments should you have specific health care concerns.

PS There is a link on RMCH's site for finding a physician in a specific medical specialty.

Great photos 6 foot 3. I loved our short visit to Gallup. We saw Zuni's dancing at the courthouse, we ate New Mexican food while buying pottery & jewelry, we saw a great local school play, we went to a flee market & bought wonderful tamales & watermelon, we went to a cute little cafe, and we stopped at a bar w/a country band. This was all in one day!
