What is there to do in New Mexico from Oct to January? What is the weather like actually? If a tourist were to visit then, what could they do? Is the state broken up north and south, or east and west? Are the various regions different from each other? Which is the better city to visit Santa Fe or Alburquerque? What are popular activities during those months?

There are basically six regions shown here: Regions & Cities - New Mexico Tourism - Places to Visit in the Southwest - New Mexico Tourism - Travel & Vacation Guide

The New Mexico Tourism Department website is here: New Mexico Tourism & Travel - Vacations, Attractions & Things to Do - New Mexico Tourism - Travel & Vacation Guide You can request their free vacation guide from here: Vacation Guide Order Form - New Mexico Tourism - Free Travel Guide - New Mexico Tourism - Travel & Vacation Guide

Events are covered here: https://www.newmexico.org/events/

As much as I love the Tourism Department web site, it is colorful, informative but still a bit busy for me. We also use TripAdvisor which is informative: tripadvisor.com

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta begins in a few weeks - October 4-12. Can't miss that! It's hard to compare Albuquerque and Santa Fe. They are both unique and beautiful cities, so you might want to visit both.

What ISN'T there to do? You can still see all the sights of Santa Fe: Canyon Rd, the Plaza, etc. There's skiing a short distance from downtown as well as sledding.

Santa Fe and ABQ are close enough together that if you visit one, you should really see the other. Santa Fe is the more touristy area (and priced accordingly).

There's several hot springs in the state that I think are a great winter time activity. Most days are sunny and warm enough for a lowland hike or bike.

Like someone else mentioned, if you come in October, you MUST go to the balloon fiesta. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta - Welcome to the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta Though hotels fill up for that event, so plan ahead.

Skiing usually starts up in late November at the northern areas.
